Job description

Senior Vice President for Student Affairs

Chapman University seeks an experienced, collaborative, forward‑thinking strategic leader to serve as Senior Vice President for Student Affairs (SVPSA). The SVPSA will guide the student affairs division during a period of institutional momentum and evolution, providing strategic leadership and vision with a focus on deepening the campus culture and its approach to personalized education.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership, policy development, and administrative oversight for Student Affairs.
  • Report to the Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff and collaborate with the full leadership team.
  • Identify areas of strength and continuity; develop and implement initiatives to improve student services and attract a high‑quality student body.
  • Supervise eight direct reports: Vice President & Dean of Students; Vice President of First‑Generation & Promising Futures Programs; Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs & Associate Dean of Students; Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Residence Life & First‑Year Experience; Executive Director of the Fish Interfaith Center; Director of Health & Counseling Services; Director of PEER & Health Education; Student Success Analyst.
  • Lead effectively amid a complex student‑affairs landscape, navigating crises, ensuring a safe environment, and maintaining adherence to policies and legal standards.
  • Collaborate with enrollment, academic affairs, and other campus units to support the entire student lifecycle.
  • Advocate for free speech and civil discourse, cultivate respectful dialogue, and facilitate student engagement.
  • Oversee Residence Life strategy to maximize occupancy, housing quality, and student well‑being.
  • Build and mentor a high‑performing team, model transparency, inclusion, and a growth mindset.

  • Record of operational innovation and excellence in a university student‑affairs division.
  • Proven executive‑level decision making aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Experience on a senior leadership team with trust, collaboration, and shared problem‑solving.
  • Leadership of high‑performing teams, budgeting, space, compliance, and crisis management.
  • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and best practices in student affairs.
  • Strong affinity for a student‑centered culture and commitment to personalized education.
  • Interpersonal skills: consultative, decisive, diplomatic, and inclusive.
  • Communication skills across diverse audiences.
  • Experience with residential life, Title IX, policies, compliance, and crisis response.
  • Commitment to free speech and civil discourse with understanding of limitations.
  • Understanding of alumni engagement and student transition to the alumni community.
Location & Compensation

Located in Orange County, California. The anticipated salary range is $300,000–$325,000, with housing available.
