To thrive as a Transit Operator at Via Transit, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and a solid understanding of traffic laws and passenger safety. Familiarity with route management systems, GPS navigation, and scheduling software is typically required. Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring passenger safety, maintaining reliable service, and providing a positive rider experience.

What is the difference between Via Transit vs Bus Driver?

AspectVia Transit
Required CredentialsCommercial driver's license (CDL), passenger endorsement
Work EnvironmentOn-demand transit services, urban and suburban routes, flexible schedules
Employer & IndustryTransportation network companies, private transit providers
Common Search & ComparisonCustomer service, driving skills, route management

Via Transit drivers operate on-demand transportation services, often with flexible hours and a focus on customer experience. In contrast, bus drivers typically follow fixed routes and schedules for public transit agencies. While both roles require a CDL and passenger endorsements, Via Transit drivers may have more flexible routes, whereas bus drivers work within established transit systems. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and preferences in the transportation industry.

What are some common challenges faced by Via Transit drivers, and how does the company support them in overcoming these obstacles?

Via Transit drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex routes, managing real-time schedule changes, and providing excellent customer service to riders with diverse needs. The company supports drivers through comprehensive training programs, access to up-to-date route technology, and ongoing communication with dispatch and support teams. Additionally, Via fosters a collaborative work environment, encouraging drivers to share feedback and best practices, which helps address daily operational challenges efficiently.

What is Via Transit?

Via Transit is a technology-enabled transit service that partners with cities, transit agencies, and organizations to provide flexible, on-demand public transportation solutions. Instead of fixed bus routes, Via uses a smartphone app or call-in system to allow riders to book shared rides that are dynamically routed in real-time. This approach increases efficiency, reduces wait times, and can expand access to public transportation in areas where traditional fixed-route services may not be practical.

Via is on a mission to create public transportation systems that provide greater access to jobs, healthcare, and education. Our platform serves as the technology backbone for modern transit networks, transforming antiquated and Via is on a mission to create public transportation systems that provide greater access to jobs, healthcare, and education. Our platform serves as the technology backbone for modern transit networks, transforming antiquated and siloed public transportation systems into smart, data-driven, and efficient digital networks. With hundreds of agency partners around the world, Via is recognized as the leading transportation technology and service provider globally.

As a Mechanic on Via's Operations team, you'll be hands-on every day - diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the buses and support vehicles that keep our transit service running. This is a technical, floor-focused role for someone who takes pride in getting under the hood, solving problems the right way the first time, and keeping a fleet on the road safely and reliably.

This is an in-person position with the expectation that you will be on-site 5 days per week. While standard schedules are provided, this role does require flexibility to work occasional evenings, Saturdays, and extended hours as business needs arise.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on & transit vehicles, and support equipment, including fluid changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, tire rotations, and scheduled service intervals
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues across engines, transmissions, braking systems, HVAC, suspension, steering, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and DOT-compliant safety inspections, identifying defects and completing repairs in line with regulatory and manufacturer standards.
  • Respond to road calls and in-service breakdowns, troubleshooting issues on-site and coordinating with the Maintenance Manager to minimize service disruption.
  • Use automotive test equipment, diagnostic software, and manufacturer diagrams to isolate issues and verify repairs.
  • Complete accurate work orders and maintain detailed service records for each vehicle, including labor, parts used, and root-cause notes.
  • Keep the shop and work areas clean, organized, and safe: tools returned, fluids stored properly, and hazards addressed before they become issues.

Who You Are:

  • Vocational automotive training and hands-on experience in medium/heavy-duty vehicle maintenance (minimum 2 years preferred;, transit bus, or diesel experience a plus).
  • Hands-on problem solver who enjoys working on the floor, not behind a desk.
  • Comfortable reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Proficient with diagnostic tools and comfortable learning new maintenance software.
  • Detail-oriented with documentation - work orders are closed out cleanly, records are accurate, and the next shift knows exactly what happened.
  • Comfortable with physical work, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working in varied shop conditions.

Licenses and Certification Requirements:

  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • ASE certifications strongly preferred (Medium/Heavy Truck or Transit Bus series - e.g., H-series or T-series).
  • CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement a plus (or willingness to obtain within a defined period post-hire).
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Successful completion of mandatory pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and motor vehicle records check.
  • Pass a drug screening and background check: no felonies, clean MVR, no DUI/DWI or reckless driving convictions, and no more than 2 speeding tickets.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment physical.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience, knowledge, and skills. Salary reflected does not include equity or variable pay, where applicable.
  • Hourly Rate: $22-26 per hour.
  • We are proud to offer a generous and comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health and retirement benefits.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.

There has never been a more exciting time to be on the cutting edge of public mobility. Ready to join the ride?
