ABOUT THE ROLE

Amrize, a leading supplier of quality, construction building materials in the United States, has immediate openings for a Rail Brakeman to support the Aggregate Production Operations in Bladensburg, MD. The position is primarily responsible safely performing railcar switching, coupling, and positioning to support the loading and unloading of aggregate materials. This mid-level role requires prior rail or industrial experience, strong safety awareness, and the ability to work outdoors while coordinating closely with plant and yard operations to ensure efficient rail movement.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Safely couple and uncouple railcars for loading and unloading of aggregate materials, including stone, sand, and gravel.
  • Operate hand brakes, switches, and track controls to position railcars within the plant yard.
  • Conduct pre-movement inspections of railcars to ensure mechanical integrity and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinate with plant operators, yard crews, and locomotive engineers to manage efficient railcar movement and placement.
  • Monitor loading operations to ensure proper weight distribution and securement of materials.
  • Maintain clear communication via radio and hand signals to ensure safe switching operations.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and railroad operating procedures to prevent incidents and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Responsible for unloading railcars (approximately 70% of the role) and inspecting the unloading conveyor system to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Perform routine maintenance on conveyor equipment, including roller replacement, lubrication, gearbox oil changes, V-belt replacement, and general inspections to maintain optimal performance
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Field of Study Preferred:
  • Required Work Experience: 1-3 years of experience in rail operations, switching, or related work in an industrial, quarry, or freight yard environment.
  • Travel Requirements: 10% of the time to Laplata, MD terminal.
  • Experience with rail switching operations, including coupling/uncoupling and spotting railcars in industrial or quarry settings.
  • Strong understanding of rail safety protocols and ability to follow FRA and MSHA regulations on the job site.
  • Ability to communicate clearly via hand signals or two-way radio with engineers and ground crew for safe coordination.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for inspecting railcars, brake systems, and track switches for safety and functionality.
  • Situational awareness and quick decision-making skills to safely manage rail movements in high-traffic, active work zones.
  • Physical stamina and strength to climb railcars, operate manual hand brakes, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail when documenting railcar numbers, switch positions, and operational logs.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
