What is a veterinary assistant intern?

A Veterinary Assistant Intern is a temporary, entry-level position designed to provide hands-on experience in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital. Interns assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with tasks such as animal care, sterilizing equipment, preparing exam rooms, and restraining animals during procedures. This role helps develop skills in animal handling, medical terminology, and clinical procedures. It is an excellent opportunity for those pursuing a career in veterinary medicine or animal care.

What does a veterinary assistant intern do?

As a Veterinary Assistant Intern, you will often assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with daily tasks such as feeding, bathing, and exercising animals, as well as preparing exam rooms and cleaning equipment. You may help restrain animals during exams or procedures, assist with laboratory tests, and provide basic administrative support like scheduling appointments or updating medical records. The role provides hands-on experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital setting, where teamwork and adaptability are key. Gaining this exposure not only builds your practical skills but also offers valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice, which is beneficial for future career advancement in animal care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a veterinary assistant intern?

To thrive as a Veterinary Assistant Intern, you should have a basic understanding of animal care, a strong interest in veterinary medicine, and preferably a high school diploma or related coursework. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, basic laboratory equipment, and safety procedures is helpful, and some internships may require proof of up-to-date vaccinations. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are vital soft skills that make candidates stand out. These abilities ensure the safe and effective support of veterinarians and veterinary technicians, providing quality care for animals and efficient clinic operations.

Can I be a veterinary assistant intern with no experience?

Veterinary assistant internships often do not require prior experience, as they are designed to provide on-the-job training. However, having basic knowledge of animal care, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn can improve your chances of securing an internship. Some programs may prefer or require a high school diploma or equivalent.

How to get a veterinary assistant internship?

To obtain a veterinary assistant internship, applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, demonstrate an interest in animal care, and gain relevant experience through volunteering or related coursework. Applying directly to veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or hospitals and highlighting skills such as communication, basic animal handling, and familiarity with veterinary tools can improve chances. Job description

The Florida Veterinary Referral Center (FVRC) externship program provides veterinary students the opportunity to gain experience in a state-of-the-art specialty referral and emergency facility dedicated to delivering both high-quality customer service and patient care. Our program is designed to allow veterinary students the option to choose from a variety of small animal clinical services such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency & Critical Care. Students may select one area of interest or rotate through several services during their externship experience.
All students are expected to attend and participate in morning and evening hospital rounds, departmental rounds and lectures, and weekly intern topic rounds. Students are expected to review various cases observed during their rotation and be able to answer questions posed to them. Each student is provided ongoing access to our library to further assist them in their clinical knowledge and understanding of cases that they may have seen or discussed during their rotations.
All students work directly with the specialists within their assigned departments. In addition, students work closely with our group of emergency clinicians, interns, and highly trained technical staff, all of whom help to provide a comprehensive and rewarding learning experience at our referral hospital.
Ethos Veterinary Health, part of the NVA Group, is where you come to practice world-class medicine, and help shape what veterinary care becomes next.
Across our network of 140 specialty and emergency hospitals, science moves forward, standards are elevated, and innovation is put into practice every day. You'll work alongside respected veterinary leaders in academic-caliber hospitals designed for learning, teaching, and discovery.
Here, mentorship is a two-way street. You'll share your expertise, learn from others, and continue to grow, clinically, professionally, and personally.
At Ethos, you inspire hope, deliver exceptional care, and pursue veterinary medicine at its highest level, together.
Benefits for this role may include health insurance (medical, dental, vision), retirement benefits, paid time off (including sick leave and vacation), short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance.
Ethos is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Ethos does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, veteran status or any other basis covered by appropriate law. All employment is decided based on qualifications, competence, merit, and business need.
