Summary This position is located at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC Operating Room. This position is within the Surgery Service. The incumbent functions at an advance level with specific and specialized training and skills required in the Surgery work setting. The Surgical Technician (ST) functions independently to provide a wide range of support to the professional nurse and physician in the Operating Room. Surgical Technician is an integral member of the surgical team and provide assistance to surgeon. Responsibilities Duties Include but are not limited to: Handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures performed in: Cardiac, Peripheral Vascular, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic, Urology, Plastic, Oral surgery, Thoracic, Gynecology, General Surgery, Pain and any other service that utilizes the Operating Room (OR) for procedures. A GS-7 Surgical Technician serves as a lead or resource person for the Operating Room nursing assistants and GS-6 and lower surgical technicians. Directs and guides nursing assistants and other surgical technicians in completing routine assignments such as setting up rooms, managing equipment and supply carts, and coordinating care with other disciplines. Sets up sterile field and test functionality with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, robotic equipment, and other operating room supplies and devices. Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure. Participates in interdisciplinary care planning and implementation including preprocedural verification and timeout. Provides accurate and complete hand-off reports to incoming team members. Inspects that instruments, supplies, and implants are sterile, free of bio-burden and defects before use in patient care. Practice Infection Control and Sharp Safety Standards. Prepares biological implants according to manufacturers' instructions before transplanting and using on patients. Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions. Maintains Operating Room area. Monitors front Operating Room desk and handles Operating Room phone calls, as assigned. Involves nursing assistants and other surgical technicians in completing routinely assigned tasks. Provides supports and directions as needed to ensure care environment is consistent with facility safety policies. Provides guidance and support to Nursing Assistants, other Surgical Technicians, and/or any other novice scrub support staff. Provides guidance and support to professional and technical students of an approved surgical technology program The operating room work environment is complex, intense and fast paced. Good mental and emotional health is required in order to function at an optimum level. Work Schedule:07:00am-3:30pm, 07:00am-5:30pm, 09:00am-7:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Surgical Technician/ 03221A Telework: Not Authorized Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of who are at stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. The ST must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirements(IOR) (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. AND, Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include utilizing knowledge of medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect sterile field during surgery; exercising sterile technique to include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging, storage, and shelf life; handling medical instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene, using knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. NOTE: Preferred experience at least 3 years in the Operating room. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond. Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
