What is the Veterans Administration?

The Veterans Administration (now called the Department of Veterans Affairs or VA) is a federal agency responsible for providing vital services and benefits to military veterans and their families. The VA offers healthcare, disability compensation, education and training, home loans, and other support programs. Its mission is to care for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces by ensuring they receive the benefits and assistance they have earned. The VA operates medical centers, clinics, and regional offices across the country to support veterans' physical, mental, and financial well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Veterans Administration role?

To thrive in a Veterans Administration (VA) role, you need a solid understanding of federal regulations, healthcare or administrative processes, and relevant educational qualifications depending on the specific position. Familiarity with VA systems such as VistA (Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture) and certifications like Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) or appropriate clinical licensure are often required. Exceptional interpersonal communication, cultural competency, and problem-solving skills distinguish top performers in serving veterans. These skills enable effective service delivery, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster trust with the veteran community.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working at the Veterans Administration, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Employees at the Veterans Administration often work in fast-paced environments where they interact with veterans who may have complex medical or administrative needs. A common challenge is managing a high caseload while ensuring personalized, empathetic service. New hires can prepare by familiarizing themselves with VA processes, developing strong communication skills, and staying adaptable to frequent policy or procedural changes. Teamwork is essential, as most roles require regular collaboration with colleagues across multiple departments to deliver comprehensive care and support.

Job description

Overview
The Senior Consultant supports VHA's mission to plan, engineer, and implement enterprise healthcare transformation initiatives aligned with the VA Secretary and Undersecretary's priorities. The consultant collaborates across VHA program offices and field operations to define shared goals, manage competing priorities, and deliver integrated solutions within optimized platforms of care delivery.
This role requires an agile approach to leading multiple, concurrent initiatives aligned with priorities that evolve in response to the needs of VHA and Veterans. Much of the work is complex, fast-moving, and ambiguous, frequently driven by emerging healthcare priorities, policy changes, and Presidential or Congressional mandates.
Ansible is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing Federal customers with solutions in many arenas. Our customers face wide-ranging challenges in the fields of national security, health care, and information technology. To address these challenges, we employ intelligent and committed staff who take care of our customers' success as if it is their own.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to client leadership and VHA stakeholders, providing practical, mission-focused support
  • Plan, manage, and execute enterprise-level healthcare transformation initiatives from concept through implementation
  • Lead and contribute to multiple concurrent projects, rapidly establishing structure, scope, and execution plans
  • Coordinate across VHA program offices, field operations, and external partners to align goals, manage dependencies, and drive decisions
  • Apply program management, industrial engineering, and healthcare systems engineering principles to design safe, comprehensive, and efficient solutions
  • Deliver enterprise program and project management services, often driven by legislation, policy changes, and executive direction
  • Identify and manage risks, resource constraints, and budget considerations across competing priorities
  • Produce high-quality, executive-ready deliverables that inform decisions and advance mission outcomes
  • Adapt quickly as priorities shift, providing concierge-level support to leadership and program teams

Qualifications
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in management consulting, healthcare transformation, or federal health programs
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
  • Preferred certifications include PMP, Prosci, Lean, and Human-Centered Design, or similar
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams) at an advanced level
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Veterans Health Administration or federal healthcare initiatives strongly preferred
  • Strong program and project management capability with experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder efforts
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort engaging senior government leaders
  • Highly organized, systematic, and proactive with strong follow-through
  • A roll up your sleeves doer who delivers without needing constant direction
  • Strong communication and problem solving skills.
  • Strong customer service acumen
  • Trusted executive-level advisory expertise
  • Coordinate across VHA program offices, field operations, and executive leadership
  • Facilitate stakeholder alignment and consensus building
  • Produce high-quality briefings, decision papers, and presentations for senior leaders

All candidates must be able to:
  • Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift
  • Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist
  • Lift up to 20 lbs
  • Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs of force

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
