Job Description

The Structural Engineer is an integral person in helping our customer’s vision for a conventional, semi- or fully automated storage solution from stow US come to life safely. The core responsibilities include structural analysis and design of medium to large scale racking systems.

Solutions: All Racking for conventional (including Pallet Racking, Mobile Racking, High Bay and Mini Load), semi-automated (Atlas 1D), and fully-automated storage systems (Atlas 2D).

Customers: We partner with leading material handling distributors and integrators throughout the United States and Canada to serve end users in a variety of industries such as food and beverage distribution, cold storage, and e-commerce in general.

Typical project size: 500K-30M  

As our Structural Engineer, you…

  • provide accurate calculations to Sales and Project Engineers during the Pre-Sales process
  • Analyze and design the structures according to the applicable standards for steel structures (ASCE, AISI, and MH16 US standards)
  • create calculation documents for the analyzed structures 
  • explain and defend the design when necessary
  • be responsible for getting materials tested and interpreted the completed test results 
  • collaborate with Project Engineers and Sales Engineers to provide the most efficient rack structure
  • manage the communication with suppliers to ensure the quality and structural integrity of their products 
  • perform preliminary analysis of the systems to support Sales Engineers to create competitive quotes
  • study and analyze the technical documentation provided by Sales and when applicable, by distributors, integrators, and end customers
  • review specifications and layouts
  • design custom parts (non-standard items or modifying standard items) 
  • be involved with new product development and engineering initiatives 
  • support HQ in the development of internal structural analysis and design software
  • provide structural engineering support for a flawless execution of the project
  • support communication between sales and the customers to obtain the necessary information to do the structural design of the systems
  • coordinate with the Project Engineer and drafters to create the structural set of drawings
  • review and stamp the calculation packages and structural drawings
  • work with licensed PEs to review and stamp the calculation packages and structural drawings

  • support project design and production efforts to ensure projects are completed on time and within the established budget
  • rarely: visit job sites for measurements, inspections, installer walk-through, and provide Engineering insights and support on Sales calls
  • oversee certain calculation algorithms and maintain databases of the used calculation software
  • oversee software development in collaboration with external parties to standardize certain calculation processes
  • participate in MHI-RMI meetings and standards committees – Rack Manufacturer’s Institute  
Qualifications

This lets us know you’re up for the job

  • Bachelors in Structural Engineering is required
  • PE Certification
  • Work experience with cold-formed steel structures or racking structures is required; familiar with RMI and AISI standards
  • Multiple years of experience with estimating and mechanical equipment design of steel structures, large storage systems (such as pallet racking and/or pallet shuttles) or other applicable material handling solutions
  • Experience with SAP2000 or similar is required
  • Experience with AutoCAD 2D or similar is required
  • On rare occasion, travel to customer sites to research, collect and report information about the site
  • If remote, occasional travel to our Romeoville, IL office (average 3 days at a time; approx. 6 times per year besides onboarding & training)
  • For onboarding and training, if remote, travel for training and onboarding to our Romeoville, IL office and regardless of your location, to our headquarters in Belgium (usually no more than 3 weeks at a time). Depending on training needs, during the first year, there could be 2-3 of such trips for the purpose of learning directly from our experienced team of Structural Engineers. 
  • We work closely with our European colleagues. The morning hours are the most important so we can connect with them while our business hours overlap across time zones. Most people start their workday at 8 am CST and some love to start even earlier so they can wrap up earlier at the end of the day.
