Velocity Developer information

What is a Velocity developer?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Velocity developer?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

How does a Velocity developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

The main difference between a Velocity Developer and a Java Developer lies in their focus areas. Velocity Developers specialize in using the Velocity templating engine for web content and document generation, often working within content management systems. Java Developers have a broader scope, working on Java-based applications, backend systems, and software development. While both roles require Java knowledge, Velocity Developers focus more on templating and presentation layers, whereas Java Developers handle core application logic.

Job description

What You'll Do

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team within our build, test, and deploy platform organization, which powers CI/CD for CoreWeave engineering. This role blends hands-on technical judgment with people leadership - you'll guide your team's execution on continuous integration (CI), build systems, artifact management and release automation, while partnering closely with senior engineers and technical leads on day-to-day design and operational decisions.

You'll be accountable for your team's health and execution, translating broader platform strategy into concrete, achievable work for your team.

In this role, you will:

  • Guide the technical direction for your team's area of ownership within the CI, build and artifact management - helping shape design decisions on pipelines, optimizations, or automation.
  • Identify opportunities to modernize workflows and reduce friction in the software development lifecycle (SDLC), and help drive adoption of new platform capabilities across internal teams.
  • Uphold standards for reliability, performance, and security within your team's scope, balancing high-availability requirements with developer experience.
  • Break down roadmap priorities into clear, actionable plans for your team, and track relevant business metrics (e.g. CI reliability, build time, artifactory latency).
  • Manage day-to-day execution, including technical debt tradeoffs and unblocking your team to hit measurable outcomes.
  • Grow and support your team members directly - regular 1:1s, mentorship, and fostering ownership and collaboration within the team.

Investing in our people is one of our top priorities, and we value candidates who can bring their diversified experiences to our teams. Here are some qualities we've found compatible with our team. We'd love to talk about whether this aligns with your experience and interests and what you're excited to work on next.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years directly managing engineers on platform, infrastructure, or internal developer teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience building or operating CI, build or artifact platforms at scale - CI pipelines, release automation, build systems, or artifact management.
  • Solid understanding of SDLC practices, code review workflows, and branching/release strategies (e.g., trunk-based development).
  • Working knowledge or hands-on experience with Kubernetes.
  • Experience managing and mentoring engineers, with a track record of supporting individual growth and team execution.
  • Comfortable defining, tracking and continuously improving business metrics (reliability, velocity, quality) for your team.
  • Champion of using automation and AI to reduce toil and improve velocity and quality.
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms, containerization, and modern CI / build practices such as GitHub Actions, JFrog Artifactory, Bazel, or similar.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, or similar.
  • Clear communicator, able to represent your team's work and technical tradeoffs to both engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
  • Familiarity with DORA metrics and delivery performance measurement.
  • Exposure to supply-chain security and compliance.
  • Experience managing engineers in a distributed environment.

The base salary range for this role is $182,000 to $242,000. The starting salary will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location. We strive for both market alignment and internal equity when determining compensation. In addition to base salary, our total rewards package includes a discretionary bonus, equity awards, and a comprehensive benefits program (all based on eligibility).
