What is the difference between Velocity Developer vs Java Developer?

AspectVelocity DeveloperJava Developer
Required CredentialsTypically Java certifications, Velocity framework knowledgeBachelor's in Computer Science, Java certifications
Work EnvironmentWeb development, content management, templatingApplication development, backend systems
Employer & Industry UsageWeb agencies, enterprise content managementSoftware companies, enterprise applications
Common Search & ComparisonVelocity Developer vs Java Developer

The main difference between a Velocity Developer and a Java Developer lies in their focus areas. Velocity Developers specialize in using the Velocity templating engine for web content and document generation, often working within content management systems. Java Developers have a broader scope, working on Java-based applications, backend systems, and software development. While both roles require Java knowledge, Velocity Developers focus more on templating and presentation layers, whereas Java Developers handle core application logic.

What are Velocity Developers?

Velocity Developers are software professionals who specialize in working with Apache Velocity, a Java-based template engine. They create, customize, and maintain dynamic web pages and email templates by integrating data models with Velocity templates. Their work often involves collaborating with front-end developers and backend engineers to ensure seamless data flow and presentation. Velocity Developers are commonly found in organizations that use Java web applications and require dynamic content rendering.

How does a Velocity Developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

As a Velocity Developer, you will frequently work closely with both designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic content within web applications. Collaboration often involves translating design mockups into Velocity templates, refining user interface elements based on feedback, and working with backend teams to access and render the necessary data efficiently. Regular meetings and code reviews help maintain alignment and ensure that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to iterate are key to successfully bridging the gap between design vision and technical implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Velocity Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Velocity Developer, you need strong skills in Java programming, templating engines, and web development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Apache Velocity, integrated development environments (IDEs) like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating business requirements into functional templates. These skills ensure efficient template development, maintainable code, and successful integration in dynamic web applications.

Job description

About Crosby AI
Crosby is an AI-first legal platform reimagining corporate legal services from the ground up. We are a team of technologists and legal experts who build proprietary technology and human-in-the-loop workflows that meaningfully improve how lawyers and machines work together - delivering speed, consistency, and quality across high-stakes work.
Our systems review complex documents faster and with exceptional accuracy, combining advanced AI with structured legal expertise. Clients receive AI-powered redlines, commentary, and negotiation guidance within hours, at a predictable, volume-based price.
Backed by Sequoia, Index Ventures, and Bain Capital Ventures, we're building the end-to-end contracting platform for the next generation of fast-growing companies.
The Team
The Engineering team builds the core systems, infrastructure, and developer tooling that power Crosby's AI-first platform. We work across backend, frontend, and AI systems to enable fast iteration, high-quality outputs, and reliable production systems.
We prioritize speed, leverage, and strong engineering foundations - investing in systems that make the entire team more effective.
The Role
As an AI Developer Experience Engineer at Crosby, you'll play a critical role in building the internal systems that enable our team to develop, evaluate, and ship AI features quickly and reliably. You'll focus on improving the developer experience around LLMs, data, and experimentation - creating tools and infrastructure that accelerate iteration while maintaining quality.
You'll partner closely with engineers, data scientists, and researchers to streamline workflows across prompting, evaluation, fine-tuning, and deployment. This role is for someone who is obsessed with leverage - building systems that make other engineers dramatically more productive.
Responsibilities
  1. Build AI developer tooling: Design and implement internal tools for prompt management, evaluation, experimentation, and model iteration.
  2. Improve iteration speed: Create systems that enable rapid testing, debugging, and comparison of model outputs across different approaches.
  3. Own evaluation infrastructure: Develop frameworks for benchmarking, regression testing, and monitoring AI system performance.
  4. Streamline data workflows: Build pipelines and tooling to support data collection, labeling, and feedback loops for model improvement.
  5. Support production systems: Partner with engineering teams to ensure AI features are reliable, observable, and easy to maintain in production.
  6. Enable the team: Identify bottlenecks in the development process and build systems that increase developer velocity and confidence.

Who You Are
  1. 3-7+ years of software engineering experience, ideally working on developer tools, infrastructure, or platform teams
  2. Strong proficiency in Python and experience building backend systems and internal tooling
  3. Hands-on experience working with LLMs, APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic), and modern AI workflows
  4. Experience building systems for experimentation, evaluation, or data pipelines
  5. Strong systems thinking with the ability to design tools that scale across teams
  6. Highly pragmatic with a focus on improving developer velocity and real-world outcomes
  7. Strong communicator who can work closely with engineers, researchers, and product teams
  8. Proactive, resourceful, and excited about building foundational systems in a fast-moving environment

Equal Opportunity
Crosby is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, reproductive health decisions, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, genetic information, political views or activity, or other applicable legally protected characteristics.
Background checks for applicants will be administered in accordance with applicable law, and qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered for employment consistent with those laws, including the New York City Fair Chance Act.
Pursuant to New York Labor Law Section 194-b, the US Pay Range for this position is listed below. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
Compensation Range: $180k-$250k
