Each year, our transportation team safely transports more than 1.5 million students, faculty, staff, and visitors across the University of New Mexico campus. As one of the first departments many guests encounter, PATS employees play a vital role in creating a welcoming, safe, and positive experience for the UNM community.
We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Transport Vehicle Service Technician to join our team. This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, values teamwork, and is committed to safety, reliability, and excellent customer service.
What You'll Do
As a Transport Vehicle Service Technician, you will help ensure our fleet operates safely and efficiently by performing inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on university transit vehicles and related equipment.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Performing daily safety and service inspections
  • Diagnosing routine mechanical and system issues
  • Conducting preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Cleaning, detailing, fueling, and road testing fleet vehicles
  • Maintaining accurate service records and inspection documentation
  • Assisting with safe fleet operations and supporting transportation services as needed
  • This role may also require safely operating a loaded passenger bus in service when necessary.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a requirement for this job.
  • As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within a scheduled transportation system
  • Experience performing routine vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance
  • Ability to use automotive diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and power tools
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to maintain records and document work accurately
  • Ability to follow through on assignments and responsibilities
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and vehicle inspection standards
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate passenger buses as needed
  • Ability to work flexible hours between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, including nights, weekends, overtime, and special events coverage as required
  • Must be a dependable team player
