Job description

Isuzu Technical Center of America is seeking a Contract Technician, Vehicle Lab to join its operations in Plymouth, MI.  The selected candidate will be placed with a preferred agency for employment.

Isuzu Technical Center of America is seeking candidates with a broad range of experience, from early-career professionals to seasoned industry experts.

JOB SUMMARY:

Prepares test vehicles for testing by vehicle engineering staff, including instrumentation, parts change, fabrication and setting vehicle to required specifications. Sets up various mechanical and electrical tests and tests equipment under engineering supervision, including interpretation of mechanical and electrical schematics. Performs diagnosis and repairs on test vehicles and durability vehicles. Maintains a safe and clean work environment.

                   PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.

Conducts diagnosis and repair on the following: suspension systems, engine systems, brake system, transmission and clutch systems, steering systems, HVAC systems, tires, and wheels.

Implements engineering design changes under daily direction of engineering staff and/or supervisor. This includes interpretation of drawings, preparation of supplies, and fabrication and installation of non-standard parts. Assists in design process and fabrication of prototype materials used on various tests.

Operates mechanical and electrical test equipment for collection of engineering data as directed. Equipment includes pressure, temperature, acceleration, and other analog transducers, analog and digital data acquisition devices. Processes test data and communicates results.

Sets up various mechanical and electrical test equipment under minimal supervision, including interpretation of mechanical, electrical, and schematic drawings, fabrication of various test fixtures.

Prepares vehicles for testing and shipment. Including completion of check sheets for data collection, safety inspection, tools, and spare parts.

Participates in testing activities as an evaluator, driver, and technician. Prepares test equipment and tools under direction. Assists engineering staff with evaluation in failure modal analysis process as required.

Evaluates vehicle performance under different test conditions (e.g., hot, cold, high altitude). Performs field repair work and part changes as directed during testing.

Organizes and maintains inventory of automotive and commercial vehicle parts, special tools, and test equipment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to: Supervisor, Vehicle Lab
  • No direct reports

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; minimum one year college level automotive courses or two-year degree in auto related field
  • Minimum one year experience as an automotive technician; prefer one year technician experience in automotive R&D environment
  • Vehicle testing and evaluation experience
  • Automotive Service Excellence Certification preferred

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of basic principles to fabricate, machine, understand blueprints to create test fixtures and vehicle parts
  • Understanding of data acquisition equipment, its installation, and operation
  • Strong grasp of SUV and CV mechanics
  • Knowledge of Commercial Vehicle Laws preferred

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for data collection and retrieval
  • Strong mechanical and electrical skills
  • Metal fabrication and welding skills
  • Ability to use machine shop tools in fabrication of special parts
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver license
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver Medical Certificate
  • Good driving record

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

Requires frequent lifting of approximately 25-60 lbs. and heavy lifting (over 60 lbs.) on rare occasions.  Frequent bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, standing, and walking are necessary in the performance of job duties. Must be able to work in hot and cold weather extremes, and high-altitude areas. Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, and noise. Position requires 20-30% travel, including overnight stays. Must be able to travel extensively within North & South America and available to participate in occasional travel/weekend work.
