As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for vehicle restoration in the United States is $18.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $19.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced in a vehicle restoration role, and how can I prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in vehicle restoration is sourcing authentic or compatible parts for older or rare vehicles, which often requires patience and strong research skills. Additionally, balancing the client's expectations with budget constraints and timelines can be demanding. You'll also encounter technical challenges, such as addressing hidden rust or structural issues that only become apparent during disassembly. Developing strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and fostering good relationships with suppliers and colleagues will help you succeed in this dynamic and rewarding field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vehicle Restoration Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vehicle Restoration Specialist, you need expertise in automotive repair, bodywork, painting, and a solid understanding of classic car mechanics, often complemented by vocational training or certifications in auto restoration. Familiarity with tools such as welders, sanders, diagnostic equipment, and restoration software like Mitchell or ALLDATA is typically required. Attention to detail, patience, and effective problem-solving are crucial soft skills for restoring vehicles to their original condition. These competencies ensure the quality, safety, and historical accuracy demanded by clients and collectors in the restoration industry.

What is vehicle restoration?

Vehicle restoration is the process of repairing and refurbishing a vehicle, usually a classic or vintage car, to return it to its original condition or better. This can involve fixing or replacing mechanical parts, repainting the exterior, restoring the interior, and sometimes upgrading certain features. The goal is often to preserve the vehicle's historical value and improve its appearance and performance. Restoration can be partial, focusing on specific areas, or full, addressing every aspect of the vehicle. It requires a combination of mechanical skill, attention to detail, and knowledge of the vehicle's history.
