Fleet Mechanic Manager

Starting Wage: $35.00–$40.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications

Wheaton-Dumont Cooperative Elevator is seeking an experienced and dependable Fleet Maintenance Manager to lead our fleet maintenance operations. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our shop while ensuring our trucks, vehicles, trailers, and agricultural equipment are safe, reliable, and ready for operation.

The Fleet Maintenance Manager will supervise Fleet Mechanics, coordinate shop workload, oversee preventive maintenance and repairs, and work closely with the Operations Manager to minimize equipment downtime and control maintenance costs. The successful candidate will be both a strong mechanic and an effective leader who takes pride in quality workmanship, safety, organization, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily operations of the fleet maintenance shop.
  • Supervise, schedule, and direct Fleet Mechanics.
  • Assign and prioritize maintenance and repair work based on operational needs.
  • Perform hands-on diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of trucks, pickups, trailers, and agricultural/off-road equipment.
  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Perform DOT inspections and ensure vehicles and equipment meet applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, suspension, and transmission systems.
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency roadside repair needs when necessary.
  • Monitor fleet availability and work to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair records.
  • Manage parts, supplies, tools, and shop equipment.
  • Monitor repair expenses and promote cost-effective maintenance practices.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and repair facilities when needed.
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager regarding fleet needs, major repairs, staffing, equipment availability, and department goals.
  • Train, coach, and support the development of Fleet Mechanics.
  • Promote a safe, professional, productive, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Ensure cooperative policies and applicable DOT, OSHA, state, and federal regulations are followed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • DOT inspection certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Minimum of two years of related mechanical experience; supervisory or shop management experience preferred.
  • Technical training in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, heavy equipment mechanics, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and agricultural equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Welding and cutting experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple repair and maintenance needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and lead a team.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, or respond to emergency repairs when operational needs require.
