Vehicle Durability Engineer information

What are Vehicle Durability Engineers?

Vehicle Durability Engineers are professionals who evaluate and improve the lifespan and reliability of vehicles and their components. They design and implement tests to simulate real-world usage, identifying potential points of failure and working with design teams to enhance product durability. Their work ensures that vehicles can withstand various stresses and environmental conditions over time, resulting in safer and more reliable products for consumers.

What is the difference between Vehicle Durability Engineer vs Vehicle Reliability Engineer?

Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Vehicle Durability Engineers focus on ensuring vehicles withstand long-term use and environmental stresses through durability testing. Vehicle Reliability Engineers concentrate on analyzing and improving vehicle systems' dependability and performance. While both roles require engineering backgrounds and involve testing, durability engineers emphasize physical endurance, whereas reliability engineers focus on system consistency and failure prevention.

What are some common challenges Vehicle Durability Engineers face when testing new vehicle models?

Vehicle Durability Engineers often encounter challenges such as replicating real-world driving conditions in a controlled environment, managing the logistics of lengthy test cycles, and quickly identifying the root causes of failures in complex systems. They must collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to implement corrective actions and ensure that recommendations are both practical and cost-effective. Staying up-to-date with evolving materials, testing technologies, and regulatory requirements is also crucial in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vehicle Durability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vehicle Durability Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or automotive engineering, with expertise in fatigue analysis, material science, and structural testing. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS, durability test equipment, and data analysis tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as FE certification. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and teamwork skills help you investigate failures and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring vehicles meet safety and longevity standards, ultimately improving product reliability and customer satisfaction.

  • The Durability Department is responsible for in-market durability and corrosion test of all Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models sold in the North American market using internally-developed objective and subjective test modes aligned to the North American environment and customer expectations.
  • Durability test activity supports corporate goals of maintaining safety, improving customer satisfaction, reducing warranty costs, and enhancing the public image of HMG products in the group's largest sales market.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Perform daily follow-up of vehicle incidents reported by test drivers and technicians. Make judgements regarding level of follow-up required. Elevate important incident reports to issue status. Report, investigate, and follow-up issues to resolution. Communicate with global stakeholders and work together to establish effective countermeasure. Follow-up on countermeasure effectiveness.
  • Complete static and dynamic vehicle inspections on a periodic basis. Monitor in detail the degradation of vehicle performance, handling, NVH, etc. Quantify degradation using subjective scales or objective measurements where appropriate. Develop and refine inspection processes and metrics.
  • Coordinate and participate in inspections of used vehicles on-site and in field. Collect and report data representing real-world customer conditions. Use survey data as a resource to inform the development of accelerated, proving ground test modes.
  • Monitor and track field durability issues from various data sources including warranty claims, port claims, FSE reports, customer survey, automotive press, and social media.
  • Install and configure data acquisition equipment. Work competently with a wide range of data inputs including vehicle CAN bus, thermocouples, strain gauge, accelerometer, and more. Retrieve data, perform analysis, and provide high-level commentary on results.
  • Support third-party data collection requests for purposes of test mode development, CAE model correlation, research study, market understanding, and setting design requirements.
  • Develop and write procedures to define and organize tasks and responsibilities for engineering, technician, or test driver staff. Communicate procedures concisely and professionally.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as purchasing requests, vacation requests, business travel plans, etc. Plan and oversee project work such as purchase of fixed assets or facility/equipment repair.
  • Serve as the voice of the North American customer by providing local experience and perspective on environment, customer usage, and expectations.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. Mechanical, Industrial, or Systems Engineering preferred
