What is a Vehicle 1D simulation engineer?

A Vehicle 1D Simulation Engineer specializes in using one-dimensional (1D) modeling tools to simulate and analyze vehicle systems such as powertrains, thermal management, and energy flow. They create and validate models to predict system performance, optimize designs, and support product development. This role often involves working with software like GT-SUITE or AMESim to evaluate concepts before physical prototypes are built, helping reduce development costs and time. The engineer collaborates closely with other engineering teams to ensure simulations accurately reflect real-world vehicle behavior.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vehicle 1D simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Vehicle 1D Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with dynamic system modeling. Proficiency with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, GT-SUITE, or AMESim, along with relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting simulation results. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately predicting vehicle performance, optimizing designs, and supporting efficient product development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Vehicle 1D simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Vehicle 1D Simulation often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse physical subsystems (e.g., powertrain, thermal, and electrical systems) into a single model and ensuring data consistency across simulation platforms. Addressing these challenges typically involves strong collaboration with other engineering teams, meticulous model validation, and continual learning of new simulation tools and methodologies. Staying up to date with the latest software updates and participating in cross-functional meetings can also help streamline communication and improve model accuracy.

What is the difference between Vehicle 1D Simulation vs Vehicle Dynamics Engineer?

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
As a Staff Thermal Attributes Engineer, you will be the subject matter expert driving the complete lifecycle of vehicle thermal attributes, from initial target setting through final vehicle sign-off. Your deep technical expertise in thermal management systems, particularly heat pump operations and efficiency optimization, will be crucial in achieving performance goals. You will leverage strong analytical skills, including advanced simulation and data analysis, and a collaborative mindset to lead the development and execution of robust thermal attribute arbitration strategies. Your work will ensure performance targets are met and validated through vehicle program milestones and final Design Verification Plans (DVPs). This role is pivotal in fostering cross-functional alignment and resolving complex engineering challenges related to vehicle level thermal performance and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Vehicle and sub system target setting for Thermal use cases
• Lead benchmark activities for comprehensive EV market evaluation
• Develop vehicle thermal arbitration strategies with deep understanding of thermal
system fundamentals such as refrigerant system operation, i.e., control, system health
and limitations
• Optimize vehicle level thermal performance with balancing key design dimensions: front-
end airflow, coolant loops, cabin and heat pump systems including
