In contrast, a Vegetable Seed Technician focuses on testing, quality control, and technical support within seed production facilities. Both roles are essential in the seed industry but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in vegetable seed production?

To thrive in Vegetable Seed Production, you need expertise in plant biology, crop management, and seed technology, often supported by a degree in agriculture or related fields. Familiarity with field equipment, seed processing machinery, and agricultural management software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure high-quality seed yields, adherence to industry standards, and efficient operation of production processes.

What is vegetable seed production?

Vegetable seed production is the process of growing, harvesting, and processing plants specifically for their seeds, which are then used to grow new vegetable crops. This involves selecting parent plants with desirable traits, carefully controlling pollination, and ensuring the seeds are viable and true to type. Proper management of disease, pests, and environmental factors is essential to produce high-quality seeds. The seeds are then cleaned, tested for quality, and packaged for sale or distribution to farmers and gardeners.

What are some common challenges faced in vegetable seed production, and how are they typically addressed?

In vegetable seed production, professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining genetic purity, controlling cross-pollination, and managing pests and diseases. These issues are addressed through careful field isolation, regular crop inspections, and integrated pest management practices. Working closely with agronomists and quality assurance teams is essential to ensure high-quality seed output, and ongoing training helps staff stay updated on best practices and regulatory requirements.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious, and results-driven Operations and Sales Intern to support our day-to-day operations and spearhead the growth of Seed-X's cutting-edge AI technology within the vital California vegetable seed markets.

This is a dynamic, "hunter" role for a hands-on, commercially astute individual who thrives in a fast-paced, high-tech environment. Based in the Davis, Salinas, or Sacramento area, you will be the face of Seed-X in your territory, balancing technical operations with proactive sales outreach to drive the adoption of our advanced seed analysis and sorting solutions among leading seed companies, breeders, and producers.

Key Responsibilities:Technical & Field Operations
  • Machine Operation: Execute and monitor AI-driven seed sorting machines to process, analyze, and grade seed and grain batches.
  • Data Collection: Conduct precise phenotyping assessments using Seed-X’s proprietary mobile software.
  • Data Management: Process, clean, and structure phenotypical data to support ongoing AI training and algorithm development.
  • Order Administration: Oversee the administrative pipeline for new customer orders, ensuring accurate data entry, thorough documentation, and seamless internal coordination.
Sales & Market Development
  • Territory Growth: Develop and execute a localized sales strategy to introduce Seed-X’s AI-powered solutions to major seed companies and vegetable breeders in the region.
  • Lead Generation: Proactively identify, target, and pitch new business opportunities to generate revenue and expand our market footprint.
  • Marketing Initiatives: Support and drive local marketing campaigns, ensuring initiatives are effectively executed, tracked, and optimized for lead generation.
  • Market Intelligence: Stay abreast of regional market trends, competitor activity, and agricultural shifts to identify new business opportunities.

Requirements

Location: Must be based in (or able to easily commute across) the Davis, Salinas, or Sacramento, CA regions.

Mindset: A positive, proactive, and highly responsible attitude with a strong willingness to learn complex technical workflows.

Industry Expertise (Strong Plus): Direct exposure to or experience within the vegetable seed industry (e.g., seed sales, crop protection, breeding support) or the broader AgTech sector is a significant advantage.

Tech Savviness: Comfortable working with new software and AI data tools; ability to conceptually understand and pitch a highly technical, data-driven product rather than a traditional agricultural commodity.

Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to interface directly with growers, plant breeders, and corporate stakeholders.
