What is a VCF?

A VCF (Variant Call Format) job typically involves analyzing genetic variations in DNA sequencing data. Professionals in this role work with bioinformatics tools to process, interpret, and manage VCF files, which store genomic variant information. These jobs are common in research, healthcare, and biotechnology fields, aiding in disease research and personalized medicine. Skills in programming, data analysis, and genomics are often required for this role.

What does a VCF analyst do?

As a VCF Analyst, your daily tasks often include processing next-generation sequencing data, managing and curating Variant Call Format (VCF) files, conducting variant annotation, and working closely with research scientists or clinicians to interpret findings. You can expect to use bioinformatics pipelines and specialized software tools to identify genetic variants and ensure data integrity and accuracy. Collaboration with molecular biologists, data scientists, and IT teams is common, as your work directly supports research or clinical projects. The role may also involve troubleshooting data quality issues and contributing to ongoing process improvements. This combination of technical and collaborative work makes each day both challenging and rewarding for those interested in genomics and data-driven discovery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for a VCF position?

To thrive as a VCF (Variant Call Format) Analyst, you need a solid background in bioinformatics, genomics, and data analysis, typically supported by relevant degrees in life sciences or computer science. Proficiency in bioinformatics tools such as GATK, bcftools, and scripting languages like Python or R is highly important, along with experience handling VCF files. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for success in this role. These competencies enable the accurate interpretation of genetic data, ensure data quality, and facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Program Description: Delivers end-to-end IT infrastructure support across all service tiers, including Tier 1 Help Desk, Tier 2 End User Support, and Tier 3 Server, Platform, and Network Engineering. The program provides comprehensive support for hardware, software, and network services; manages incidents, problems, and service requests; maintains continuous infrastructure monitoring and operations; oversees hardware and software lifecycle activities; and ensures coordinated escalation and resolution across all tiers to maintain service continuity and performance.

Position Description:

Provides technical leadership and engineering oversight for the design, implementation, and operation of the enterprise virtualized infrastructure, with a focus on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), vSphere, NSX, and hybrid cloud integration. This role serves as the escalation point for complex issues, drives architectural decisions, and ensures the environment is optimized for performance, resiliency, and scalability.

The environment spans on-premises SDDC infrastructure (compute, storage, network), VCF-based platforms, and cloud services (e.g., Azure/AWS), requiring deep expertise in workload placement, lifecycle management, and hybrid connectivity.

Requirements

· Lead architecture, design, and evolution of VMware-based SDDC environments, including VCF domains, vSphere clusters, vSAN, and NSX networking.

· Plan and execute workload migrations across environments, including data center migrations, adoption, and workload rebalancing.

· Integrate site-to-site recovery strategy using JetStream, including supporting disaster recovery runbooks, tabletops, failover/failback processes, and recovery validation.

· Plan and coordinate VCF lifecycle management activities, including patching, upgrades, and bundle management across domains.

· Lead reoccurring performance and capacity planning across compute, storage, and network layers, ensuring efficient resource utilization and future scalability.

· Design and implement network segmentation and microsegmentation using NSX, aligned to Zero Trust and security requirements.

· Define and manage infrastructure service offerings, including customization profiles and service catalog capabilities within VCF (or equivalent SDDC abstractions).

· Lead complex troubleshooting across the full stack (compute, storage, network, and virtualization layers), including performance degradation and stability issues.

· Oversee and enhance backup and recovery solutions to ensure data protection, integrity, and availability.

· Establish and maintain automation patterns for provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management.

· Ensure security and compliance through patching, configuration management, and integration with enterprise security controls.

· Maintain authoritative documentation for architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.

· Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering and operations teams.

· Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to the platform and operating model.

Required Skills:

· Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

· 10+ yrs leading virtualization administration.

· Demonstrated experience in leading the management of VMware, Hyper-V, or similar technologies.

· Must have VCF experience.

· Automating IT administration and server provisioning through tools such as Azure DevOps, Azure Automation, Azure CLI, Bicep, PowerShell, JavaScript, and/or VMWare PowerCLI.

· Integrating infrastructure tool APIs to enable the deployment of Infrastructure as Code integrated with CI/CD deployment pipelines.

·

Preferred Skills

· Minimum: VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

· Preferred: VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
