What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Valve Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Valve Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and a background in industrial maintenance, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant certification. Familiarity with valve testing equipment, calibration tools, and industry standards such as API or ISO is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of valves, which is critical for minimizing downtime and maintaining system integrity in industrial environments.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in valve maintenance and repair roles?

Professionals in valve maintenance and repair often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex malfunctions, working in confined or hazardous environments, and keeping up with evolving technology and safety regulations. The role may require coordinating with multiple teams, including engineering, operations, and safety, to ensure that valves function reliably and efficiently. Staying current with manufacturer specifications and industry best practices is key to minimizing downtime and ensuring compliance.

What are valves and what do they do?

Valves are mechanical devices used to control the flow and pressure of liquids, gases, or slurries within a system or process. They can start or stop flow, regulate or throttle flow, prevent backflow, or relieve pressure. Valves are essential components in a variety of industries, including water and wastewater, oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing. Different types of valves are designed for specific functions, such as gate valves for isolation or ball valves for quick shut-off. Choosing the right valve depends on the application's requirements such as pressure, temperature, and the nature of the fluid being controlled.

What is the difference between Valves vs Pipefitters?

AspectValvesPipefitters
Required CredentialsCertifications in valve installation and maintenance, technical trainingPipefitting certifications, technical training in pipe systems
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, plumbing systemsConstruction sites, industrial plants, piping systems
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, industrial facilities, plumbing companiesConstruction firms, industrial plants, plumbing contractors

Valves and pipefitters both work in industrial and construction environments, often overlapping in plumbing and piping systems. Valves focus on installing, maintaining, and repairing valve components, while pipefitters handle the broader installation and assembly of piping systems. Understanding their roles helps employers and job seekers identify the right skills and certifications needed for each profession.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will help design the next generation of valves for use on our Lunar program. Your scope will encompass the complete life cycle of the system from definition, interfaces, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, and operation. You will own your components from initial design to analyzing data from their landing on the moon! You will design and perform 1st order analyses to verify your designs. You will work with suppliers or Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components. You will build Lunar vehicles in CAD by modeling valves, propulsion elements, sensors, piping, and other equipment in the flight vehicle. You will size, select material, and analyze flow and structural integrity under pressure, vibration, temperature and mechanical loads. You will work with suppliers and other support organizations to procure, fabricate, and install flight hardware.

You may mentor entry level engineers and perform technical peer reviews.

Bring your technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Specify valve types and applications, materials usage, and design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, and/or electrical analysis of components and subsystems focused on fluid flow systems and chemical processes as related to valves
  • Work effectively with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and technicians to fabricate and test prototypes and produce results within defined schedule and budget constraints.
  • Conduct multiple analysis, design, and test activities simultaneously
  • Work with suppliers to specify components as needed
  • Engage in both early-stage, long-term development and near-term, flight program hardware design
  • Evolve prototypes into flight-qualifiable hardware
