Job description

Salary: $26.35 - $43.91 Hourly
Location : 55 Gold Dust Rd., Cascade, ID
Job Type: Full Time Regular
Job Number: 26-00251
Department: Road and Bridge
Division: Road Technicians
Opening Date: 06/03/2026
Closing Date: Continuous
Summary
The Valley County Road & Bridge Department is seeking a dedicated, highly skilled professional to fill the role of Road Maintenance Technician 2. This advanced-level position is ideal for an experienced equipment operator who thrives in an active, hands-on environment, operates heavy production machinery with high precision, and takes pride in keeping the county's infrastructure safe and reliable for the community.
This is a full-time position with full county benefits.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities
Working under minimal supervision, the Road Maintenance Technician 2 plays a vital role in maintaining the safety and integrity of county roads and bridges. This position is perfect for an individual who enjoys variety in their workday, as tasks shift seamlessly with the seasons.
  • Spring & Summer Operations: During the warmer months, the technician focuses on specialized road construction and infrastructure rehabilitation. This includes performing advanced road construction tasks such as pioneering new road sections, cutting slopes, establishing sub-grades, and precision ditching. The technician also designs and implements complex, non-standard work zone traffic control plans according to MUTCD guidelines.
  • Winter Operations: When winter weather hits, the technician takes on the critical responsibility of leading complex winter plowing operations on high-difficulty mountain passes or heavily drifted routes. This includes operating rotary snowblowers or motor graders equipped with snow wings under hazardous winter conditions to ensure commuter safety.

A successful candidate will safely operate complex heavy equipment with high precision, including motor graders (for finish grading and snow winging), large excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, chip spreaders, and heavy rollers, while diagnosing minor mechanical field issues and mentoring Technician 1 staff.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Road Maintenance Technician 2 is distinguished from the Technician 1 position in that incumbents must possess a Class A CDL with a Tanker endorsement, possess an LHTAC Road Scholar certification, demonstrate mastery over heavy machinery (e.g., motor graders, excavators, bulldozers, etc.), and possess advanced technical troubleshooting and work-zone layout skills.
While a Technician 1 focuses on standard commercial vehicles and medium-sized equipment, the Technician 2 executes specialized, high-precision construction and maintenance tasks under minimal supervision.

  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement.
  • A valid Idaho Traffic Control Flagger Certification.
  • An LHTAC Road Scholar certification.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in heavy equipment operation and road maintenance, or a demonstrated mastery of complex equipment, with proven skill operating motor graders and excavators to precise grade specifications.
  • A thorough knowledge base of soil mechanics, drainage principles, and asphalt/gravel application techniques.

When applying, please provide a resume or detailed work history that shows your relevant training and experience.
