Job description

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a world-class biomedical research institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is dedicated to improving human health. We are pioneers in the fight against cancer, Parkinson's, and other diseases. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and educators.
The Lab of Darren Moore in the Department of Neurodegenerative Science at Van Andel Institute is looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellow to join a collaborative research program focused on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying Parkinson's disease.
The position is available for an ambitious scientist to use or establish biochemical, cell biological and rodent models to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying VPS35 or LRRK2 mutations in familial Parkinson's disease. The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach in numerous experimental model systems, including primary neurons and astrocytes, human iPSC-derived models, rodents and human brain tissue, to elucidate the normal biological function and pathophysiological mechanisms of proteins linked to inherited forms of Parkinson's disease, with a particular interest in the role and convergence of these proteins in the endolysosomal pathway.
Qualifications
  • A recent Ph.D. graduate with demonstrated experience in any of the following fields: cell biology, biochemistry and/or neuroscience. At least one publication in these fields would be desirable.
  • A preferred candidate will have experience in any of the following research areas: primary culture-based assays; iPSC models; confocal imaging and quantitative analysis; development of genetic animal models; rodent neuropathology and behavior; or molecular/cellular neurobiology.

Description of a Successful Candidate
  • A self-motivated and driven individual who is able to exhibit exceptional research productivity and take responsibility for independent management of a project.
  • A detail-oriented researcher who still keeps a clear grasp of the big picture.
  • A team player who proactively shares knowledge and expertise with lab members.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

How to Apply
Qualified applicants should submit a single PDF including:
  • Cover letter outlining research experience and fit with the lab
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Contact details for 2-3 references

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. For questions, please contact Natalie Hartford at natalie.hartford@vai.org or Darren Moore at darren.moore@vai.org.
