Nature & Purpose of Position
The Navigator serves as a front-line representative of the Veterans and Military-Connected Center (VMCC) at Sam Houston State University. This position is designed to assist military-connected students, including veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and dependents, by guiding them through campus resources and university services. Navigators provide peer-to-peer support, ensure a welcoming environment within the center, and help facilitate student success through outreach, engagement, and administrative assistance. The purpose of this role is to enhance the overall experience of military-connected students by connecting them to academic, personal, and professional resources that support their needs. Navigators play a crucial role in fostering community, enhancing student retention, and bridging the gap between the VMCC and the broader SHSU community.
Other Requirements for the Position
Candidates should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to complete tasks accurately and on time. Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with individuals and groups are essential. Some work may occur occasionally during nights and on weekends.
Requirements:โ€ข Handling general office tasks and procedures
โ€ข Supporting event setup and breakdown
โ€ข Performing public presentations to peers, staff members, and guests.
โ€ข Must be currently using VA Educational Benefits at Sam Houston State University.
โ€ข Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week and have at least one 1-hour availability block between Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
โ€ข Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA or higher and be in good standing with the university.
โ€ข Be able to work an entire academic year (including the Summer Term) while maintaining sufficient enrollment for Work-Study status
โ€ข Enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours, or be considered ยพ time, during the Fall and Spring semesters.
โ€ข Enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours per Summer Term, or 6 credit hours for a 10-week session
Pay rate: $10.00/hour (College Work Study if applicable) and $7.25/hour (VA Work Study).
