What is a UX designer?

UX Designers, or User Experience Designers, are professionals who focus on optimizing the overall experience users have when interacting with a product or service. They conduct research, create user personas, design wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate with other teams to ensure that products are intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable to use. Their goal is to make products that meet user needs while aligning with business objectives. They play a key role in improving customer satisfaction and loyalty by making digital interfaces user-friendly.

What does a UX designer do?

A UX (user experience) designer looks at all of the elements of a user-based website or digital experience and creates improvements with the user in mind. This can mean creating a fresh new visual design plan or revamping the entire structure of the site. The UX Designer works with content strategists, developers, and managers to create a wireframe, plan the elements of design or a stylebook, and create a new experience for testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Designer, you need a solid understanding of user research, wireframing, prototyping, and interaction design, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is essential. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you effectively understand user needs and work with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure the creation of intuitive, user-centered products that drive engagement and satisfaction.

How do UX designers typically collaborate with developers and other stakeholders during a project?

UX Designers frequently work closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders throughout the design process. They participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss user needs, share design prototypes, and gather feedback to ensure that the final product aligns with both user expectations and technical constraints. Regular check-ins and design reviews help address any challenges early, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone contributes to a user-centered outcome. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating design with development workflows.

This is a hands-on Principal-level individual contributor role requiring a strategic design leader who personally drives design execution while influencing product direction across the organization.
Reporting to the Director of Product Management, the Principal UX Designer transforms complex data integration, streaming, and agentic AI workflows into intuitive, scalable experiences for enterprise users. Experience designing products within the data modernization, data infrastructure, or enterprise platform domain is highly preferred, along with a strong understanding of AI-powered and agentic user experiences.
Working cross-functionally with Product Management, Engineering, and Go-to-Market teams, the Principal UX Designer establishes a cohesive UX vision that simplifies sophisticated technical workflows and delivers a seamless experience across the platform.
Candidates must be able to work from the Palo Alto, CA office on a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities:
  • Define and champion the company's UX vision across unified real-time data streaming, data integration, and agent-based AI products.
  • Establish and scale design systems, interaction standards, and UX best practices to ensure consistency across complex technical workflows.
  • Drive user research initiatives, usability testing, and customer feedback loops to inform roadmap prioritization and product iteration.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to translate strategic goals into intuitive user journeys and feature experiences.
  • Partner with Engineering leadership to ensure feasibility, performance considerations, and technical constraints are incorporated into UX solutions.
  • Design experiences that simplify data pipeline configuration, real-time monitoring, observability, governance, and AI-driven insights.
  • Develop enterprise-grade UX patterns that address role-based access, security, compliance, and multi-environment deployments.
  • Contribute to product positioning and go-to-market alignment by ensuring user experience supports customer adoption and expansion.
  • Define and track UX metrics (e.g., adoption, time-to-value, task completion rates, NPS) to measure impact and drive continuous improvement.
  • Advocate for accessibility, performance, and inclusive design principles across all digital touchpoints.
Requirements:
  • 8+ years of experience in UX design, with at least 3+ years in a senior or principal capacity.
  • Proven experience designing complex B2B enterprise software, preferably within data modernization, data infrastructure, streaming technologies, or AI platforms, with an understanding of event-driven architectures, CDC, ETL/ELT, and AI-driven workflows.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating experience simplifying complex technical workflows into scalable, intuitive, and user-centered product experiences.
  • Expertise leveraging modern AI-powered design and engineering tools (e.g., Figma AI, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, v0, or similar) to accelerate design workflows, prototype intelligent experiences, and design AI-native or agentic product interactions.
  • Deep understanding of UX research methodologies, interaction design, information architecture, and design systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and GTM teams.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present UX strategy and influence leadership decisions.
  • Experience working with enterprise customers and incorporating field feedback into product improvements.
  • Eligibility to work on a hybrid basis from our Palo Alto, CA office.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Cognitive Science, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive health care plans (medical, dental and vision), including medical and dependent FSA
