Job description

OSP Technician / Utility Locator

Location: Various U.S. Locations (Travel Required)

Employment Type: Full-Time | Contract Opportunities Available

About the Role

We are looking for experienced OSP Technicians / Utility Locators to help protect underground fiber optic infrastructure throughout active construction projects. This position is ideal for candidates with experience performing utility locates, responding to 811 tickets, reading fiber maps, and working in outside plant (OSP) environments.

You'll play a critical role in preventing damage to underground telecommunications facilities while coordinating with contractors, engineers, municipalities, and property owners. Candidates who enjoy working independently, traveling, and solving problems in the field are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Utility Locating & Fiber Protection

  • Respond to and manage 811 utility locate requests.
  • Locate and mark underground fiber optic facilities using industry-standard locating equipment.
  • Protect telecommunications infrastructure during excavation and construction.
  • Read and interpret fiber maps, construction prints, and utility drawings.
  • Document locate activity and maintain accurate field records.

Outside Plant (OSP) Operations

  • Patrol fiber routes and inspect outside plant infrastructure.
  • Identify potential risks before they become service-impacting issues.
  • Respond to planned cable intrusions (PCI), emergency outages, and hot tickets.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance inside regeneration huts and network facilities.

Right-of-Way Management

  • Inspect right-of-way corridors for vegetation, construction conflicts, and potential hazards.
  • Coordinate with contractors regarding clearing and maintenance activities.
  • Communicate professionally with property owners regarding right-of-way access.
  • Partner with engineering teams to resolve field issues efficiently.

Project Coordination

  • Attend meetings with contractors, utility companies, municipalities, and state agencies.
  • Support ongoing fiber construction and infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Represent the company in the field while maintaining excellent customer service and professionalism.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support multiple territories as business needs require.
  • Train and mentor new technicians.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency restoration work.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in Utility Locating, OSP, Telecommunications, Fiber Construction, or Underground Utility work.
  • Experience responding to 811 locate requests.
  • Ability to read fiber maps, utility prints, and construction drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred

  • Experience locating fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure.
  • OSP or utility locating certifications.
  • Experience working with contractors, municipalities, or utility companies.
