About STAX Engineering

STAX Engineering is helping transform the maritime industry through innovative emissions capture technology that improves air quality and reduces environmental impact at ports throughout California.

We are seeking multiple System Managers to join our Operations team in the Bay Area. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing barge operations, leading field personnel, maintaining operational readiness, troubleshooting complex equipment, and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of STAX's Emission Reduction as a Service (ERaaS) system.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving technical challenges, leading crews in dynamic environments, and taking ownership of operational success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive maintenance strategies for maritime systems, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and system performance issues in real time.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of systems to identify potential issues early; implement corrective actions promptly.
  • Oversee project scheduling for system upgrades, repairs, and new installations, coordinating resources and timelines effectively.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of all maintenance activities, system modifications, and project progress for transparency and regulatory compliance.
  • Foster a safety-first environment by promoting adherence to operational protocols and industry best practices in maritime operations.
  • Supervise, coach, train, and mentor deckhands and operational personnel.
  • Promote accountability, safety, attendance, and performance standards among team members.
  • Support employee performance management, investigations, and corrective action processes as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, operational, and customer requirements.
  • Support operations at other California ports as business needs required.

What We're Looking For:

  • Proven experience leading teams in maritime, industrial, manufacturing, energy, utility, transportation, military, or technical operations environments
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, technical, or engineering troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to assess operational issues and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Experience directing field personnel and managing work in safety-sensitive environments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coach employees, address performance concerns, and maintain accountability standards
  • Experience ensuring a team follows established policies, procedures, and workforce standards while balancing hands-on operational needs
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in fast-paced operational settings
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Maritime, marine engineering, vessel operations, port operations, shipyard, heavy industrial, utilities, or power generation experience
  • Experience supervising crews in highly regulated or safety-sensitive environments
  • TWIC Card (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
  • Boater Safety Card (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
  • Maritime license, military technical leadership experience, or engineering background preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical, Environmental, Maritime Studies, or related field, OR equivalent hands-on operational experience

Physical Requirements:

This is an active field leadership role requiring:

  • Climbing stairs and accessing vessels during operations
  • Working at heights and around industrial equipment
  • Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Standing, walking, troubleshooting, and performing hands-on operational activities throughout the workday

Travel:

Primary assignment will be in the Bay Area. Occasional travel to support operations in Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Port Hueneme may be required.

Why Join STAX?

  • Join a mission-driven organization improving air quality and environmental sustainability
  • Help shape the future of clean maritime technology
  • Competitive compensation with accelerated pay progression after training
  • Opportunity to grow with an innovative and rapidly expanding company

If you're a hands-on leader who enjoys solving complex technical problems, leading teams, and making an impact in a growing industry, we'd love to hear from you.
