Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY: Oversee workflow through department by assisting operators with set-ups and production on various machines. Produce sheet metal parts to fill customer orders with the use of provided prints and bills of material, or supervisor instruction. Responsible for accuracy in machine set-up, finished part dimensions and labor reporting. Set up a variety of equipment including large brake press, turret, laser. Operate under the principles of a cell environment, replenish parts, CI improvement, safety, quality, efficiency, delivery and cost. Maintain 5s improvements. Perform daily and routine maintenance.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruct and/or train new employees on various equipment as instructed by supervisor.

Complete daily standard work as instructed by supervisor.

Assign work for the Department in the absence of the supervisor.

Set up and operate a variety of equipment including Large Press Brake, Turret Press, Laser, Sweep Form Equipment and Pem Serter.

Operate under the principles of a cellular environment:

- Become certified in all cell processes.

- Replenishment of parts based on visual triggers, i.e., Kanban.

- Continuous improvement of quality, safety, delivery and cost.

- Maintain daily control of process using SPC.

Maintain clean and organized work areas.

Work with basic computer programs. (Outlook, Word, Excel, BaaN, and other computer software as needed.)

Observe operator proficiency and re-instruct when necessary.

Ability to read and interpret manufacturing prints.

Ability to use measuring equipment to verify print dimensions.

Maintain a daily tracking of quality, safety, delivery and cost measures.

Report labor and job data accurately.

Perform other jobs within the department or plant as required by supervision.

May be responsible for buying some specialty tools as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Ability to read an interpret manufacturing prints required. Complete Company forklift and aerial lift training and maintain license/certification.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience in a manufacturing environment is beneficial. Must be proficient in the operation of the equipment listed above.

SKILLS:

A good command of the English language is required, both written and spoken. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. Operators are required to read and follow instructions on the prints, and route sheets. Reporting and recording of results is required on all route sheets as per ISO procedure 44. Should be able to check parts to print and do daily routine preventative maintenance of equipment including sharpening of tools. Computer and BAAN systems awareness and operation. Candidate should be a self-starter and be able to communicate issues and improvements to other cell members and internal customers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to physically perform essential functions of the job. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., frequently up to 24 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs. Typically requires standing on a regular basis, and walking, stooping (bending and twisting) and reaching occasionally. Sheet metal parts are handled constantly throughout the day. Specific vision requirements include depth perception and peripheral vision.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regularly exposed to noise, temperature extremes, and pinch point hazards on all Dept. 29 machinery. Typically requires the use of a turret press, hydraulic press brake, laser, forklift, plasma cutter and Pemsert machine. Hearing protection, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes with metatarsal protection and gloves are required.
