Description:

Summary/Objective

The Asphalt Lute Man is responsible for assisting asphalt paving crews by ensuring proper placement, grading, and finishing of asphalt materials. This position plays a critical role in achieving a smooth, uniform pavement surface by using hand tools, lutes, rakes, and other equipment to distribute and shape asphalt behind the paver.


Essential Functions

  • Use asphalt lutes, rakes, shovels, and hand tools to spread and level asphalt material.
  • Assist in achieving proper grade, slope, and surface appearance according to project specifications.
  • Remove excess material and fill low areas to ensure a smooth finished product.
  • Work closely with the paving foreman, screed operators, and roller operators during paving operations.
  • Assist with handwork around utilities, curbs, catch basins, sidewalks, and other obstacles.
  • Monitor mat quality and identify areas requiring correction.
  • Help maintain a safe and productive work environment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Assist with traffic control setup and site cleanup as needed.
  • Perform general labor duties related to paving operations.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Previous asphalt paving experience preferred.
  • Ability to read grade stakes and follow project specifications.
  • Knowledge of asphalt paving practices, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Reliable transportation and punctual attendance.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with commercial asphalt paving projects.
  • Understanding of paving tolerances and quality standards.
  • Ability to operate small equipment such as plate compactors, walk-behind rollers, and asphalt saws.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.

Safety Requirements

  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, and work boots.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and jobsite inspections.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow all company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements.

Work Environment

This position involves working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. All necessary safety equipment and training will be provided to ensure a secure and productive work environment.


Physical Demands

Candidates must be comfortable performing physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions year-round. Responsibilities include frequent lifting and carrying of materials or equipment weighing up to 75 lbs, regular climbing and working from ladders, and extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
