Job description

Job Description The purpose of this job is to train with a licensed Utility Maintenance Crew Leader to obtain necessary licenses for the department. While training you will learn to operate and maintain heavy equipment; receive work orders and delegate work assignments to other members of the work crew; and assist in the supervision of department personnel as required. This is a safety sensitive and/or DOT position.

As such, you will be required to participate in random drug testing at the city. Job Functions The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Shadow licensed crew leader to gain experience in supervisor responsibilities while preparing for licensure examination. Leads and trains a crew of four to five employees in the repair and maintenance of water and sanitary sewer lines and related infrastructure. Operates a backhoe and other heavy equipment used to excavate for the repair and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure.

Performs on call duties 24 hours per day, seven days per week as assigned. Completes daily work orders. Communicates and coordinates with supervisors on task assignments.

Receives and responds to public inquiries. Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and ensures compliance with preventive maintenance requirements for heavy equipment. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications High school diploma, GED equivalent or higher 1 year of experience in a related field Required Licenses or Certifications Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement or higher Class II Wastewater Collection System Operator License as required by TCEQ or the ability to obtain within 2 years Class C Water Distribution Operator License or the ability to obtain within 2 years Supplemental Information Knowledge of: English grammar, spelling, punctuation Heavy equipment operation and safety requirements Water and sewer infrastructure throughout the City and OSHA safety standards Heavy equipment preventive maintenance regulations and standards Safety standards, procedures, and proper digging techniques in equipment operation Utility related repair practices Industry practices and proper management skills Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment Skill in: Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature Safe operation of heavy equipment Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios Assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and reviewing work assignments Ability to: Meet schedules and deadlines of the work Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Handle emergency situations and stressful situations Understand and carry out oral and written directions Prioritize job assignments and determine manpower for task completion Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
