Job description

Job Title:           Utility Locator

Department:   Public Works

Supervisor:      Project Manager II/Senior Project Manager 

FULL SALARY RANGE: $27.59 - $36.62

ANTICIPATED HIRING SALARY RANGE: $27.69 - $32.11            Commensurate to experience.

This is a fully benefited, fulltime, hourly position.

REMOTE/HYBRID: Typical schedules are inoffice Monday through Friday. Remote or flexible scheduling may be discussed upon hire and requires supervisor approval.

RELOCATION: This position is located in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Relocation assistance is not provided.

About the Role

As a Utility Locator, you will play a vital role in accurately identifying, marking, and documenting Greenwood Village’s underground infrastructure. This position requires strong communication skills, technical accuracy, and the ability to collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and residents. Your work directly supports safe construction, utility protection, and efficient community operations.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesField Locating Tasks
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal staff, contractors, and citizens while coordinating utility locate activities.
  • Read and interpret utility maps, plan sets, prints, and aerial imagery.
  • Safely and efficiently locate storm drain systems, electrical infrastructure, and telecommunication lines associated with traffic signals and streetlights.
  • Review locate tickets, prioritize work, and plan daily routes and timelines.
  • Operate and maintain specialized locating equipment and handheld detection devices.
  • Mark underground infrastructure using spray paint, flags, or other approved methods.
  • Conduct onsite meetings with contractors, participate in project discussions, and identify utility line locations.
  • Respond to emergency locate requests and assist with inquiries, complaints, and regulatory explanations.
Data Collection and Reporting
  • Use GIS software to input, update, and maintain asset information.
  • Maintain accurate records and construction drawings to meet state accuracy requirements.
  • Prepare reports, forms, summaries, and documentation for completed work or damaged utilities.
  • Complete all required digital documentation and paperwork.
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Perform minor maintenance on equipment and tools.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Manage inventory of locating supplies and replenish materials as needed in alignment with purchasing policies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Familiarity with engineering, cartographic, GIS, and GPS principles.

  • Ability to work in varied terrain, on construction sites, public and private properties, and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage daily responsibilities effectively.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • One to three years of progressively responsible experience in a related field; utility or construction experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; any combination of training and experience providing the required skills will be considered.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license or the ability to obtain one, with an acceptable driving record.
