What are Utility Design Engineers?

Utility Design Engineers are professionals who plan, design, and oversee the installation and maintenance of utility infrastructure such as water, gas, electricity, and telecommunications systems. They ensure that utility systems are safe, efficient, and compliant with regulatory standards. Their work involves creating detailed engineering drawings, coordinating with contractors and utility companies, and solving technical challenges related to utility networks.

What are some common challenges faced by Utility Design Engineers when coordinating with multiple stakeholders on a project?

Utility Design Engineers often work with a diverse group of stakeholders, including utility companies, contractors, government agencies, and clients. One common challenge is aligning the differing priorities and technical requirements of each party while ensuring compliance with regulations and safety standards. Job description

PND Engineers is seeking a licensed Civil Design Engineer to join either our Anchorage or Palmer, Alaska, offices. This role is ideal for professionals who enjoy solving complex design challenges, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. This position will support and lead site civil development on infrastructure projects throughout Alaska, from public and commercial buildings to waterfront development, recreational facilities, utilities, and transportation projects. From preliminary engineering and field reconnaissance through final design, bidding, and construction support, this is an opportunity to work on a wide range of civil engineering projects while contributing to practical, meaningful infrastructure in Alaska’s challenging environments.

What You Will Do:

  • Under the general direction of a Principal Engineer, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, including civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, survey, utility, hydrology, coastal, and construction personnel.
  • Prepare and oversee production of engineering deliverables, including plans, specifications, estimates, calculations, design reports, and other technical documents.
  • Support construction administration and inspection efforts.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, EITs, designers, and technical staff.
  • Occasionally travel within Alaska for site visits and progress inspections.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Professional Civil Engineer registration in Alaska, or current PE registration in Civil Engineering from another U.S. jurisdiction with the ability to obtain Alaska registration within 6 months of hire.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional civil engineering experience. Experience in construction, transportation, or water/wastewater utility design is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and coordinate with clients, agencies, subconsultants, and internal project teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, as well as other engineering software applications.
  • Excellent time management skills, and ability to produce accurate, efficient work within budget and time constraints.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel for inspection, site assessments, and project coordination. Some overnight or multi-day trips may be required. Travel requirement is less than 10%.
  • Valid U.S. drivers’ license and good driving record required.
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States without need for employer sponsorship.

Experience in construction, transportation, or water/wastewater utility design is a plus.
