Description
PURPOSE: Under the supervision of the Senior Engineering Aide and Public Works Director, the employee assists the City Engineer or Consulting Engineer with a variety of office and field engineering tasks related to inspections, evaluations, field measurements, research, plan reviews, contract management and record keeping. The Engineering Aide II may perform inspections on projects to ensure compliance with specifications, prepares legal documents and easements, and assists in research and other related duties.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Functions as an inspector on construction projects, sidewalk, curb and gutter installation and various contract work. Performs erosion and sediment control inspections, MS4 compliance inspections and MS4 complaint investigations. Ensures that street cut replacement and driveway turnouts in curb and gutter sections comply with city regulations. Performs field measurements using a surveyor's level, laser level, and tape measure in executing inspections, evaluations and support of construction projects. Prepares documents for property acquisition, right-of-way vacations, grant applications, contract procurement, construction documentation, inspection documentation, MS4 compliance and other miscellaneous Engineering documents. Prepares estimates for various construction projects. Maintains all digital and paper files associated with engineering. Provides verbal and written professional communication with external contacts, city personnel and the general public. Performs preliminary review of site development, utility, subdivision, contractor-performed and other various plans with summary recommendations to the City Engineer. Researches information concerning deeds, right-of-ways, easements, streets, codes, ordinances, wards, city limits, vacated streets and other items pertaining to engineering. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Basic surveying methodology and knowledge of MS4 program; Knowledge of basic construction methods; Mathematics skills as it applies to computation of distances, angles and area; Knowledge of accurate recordkeeping methods; Professional written communication; Must be able to obtain the Qualified Credentialed Inspector (QCI) certification within six months of employment to perform erosion and sediment control inspections. Ability to obtain and maintain QCI certification; Ability to perform basic surveying procedures with a surveyor's level; Ability to learn and apply the policies and practices of the department; Ability to perform basic surveying procedures; Skills to use, clean, repair, and maintain survey instruments and equipment; Ability to perform basic drafting procedures; Ability to carry out routine inspections of minor construction work; Skills to make basic engineering calculations; Ability to read and interpret maps, charts and plans; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written procedures and maintain accurate records; Operate a personal computer and utilize basic software, such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word programs; Understand and carryout oral and written instructions; Effectively communicate both orally and in writing to co-workers, supervisors, attorneys, engineers and general public; Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels as well as with other agencies and the public. Willing to work nonstandard hours. Must be willing to travel overnight to attend conferences, meetings, and professional development courses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possess valid driver's license. Possess a high school diploma or GED and some course work in algebra, trigonometry and drafting. Any combination of education and experience which provide the qualifications listed above.
