Job description

Purpose Operates combination cleaning truck in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies for the preventative maintenance of the Utility system. This includes operations in water, wastewater, and stormwater. Essential Functions Operates equipment used for the preventative maintenance of the Stormwater and wastewater system; Operates equipment involving hydro excavation activities where other underground utilities exist in the repair of underground utility systems (water, wastewater, and stormwater); Performs a variety of manual laboring tasks; Performs cleaning of stormwater and wastewater assets including the removal of debris while in the activities of preventative maintenance and emergency responses (stormwater and wastewater); Performs cleaning of wastewater releases, evaluates and determines necessary containment methods; Operates equipment in by-pass maintenance repairs. This includes pump and haul activities; Assists in reviewing and scheduling preventative maintenance including pre-planning for traffic control situations as well as access to easement areas; Operates hand tools appropriate to the assigned field; Operate and maintain high pressure cleaning nozzles specific to stormwater and wastewater cleaning activities; Performs cleaning activities to include the use of grease and root treatment chemicals; Performs appropriate inspections and keeps equipment and vehicles clean and in safe working order; Ensures all tasks are completed in a safe and efficient manner; Performs operator maintenance/repairs, reports major repairs; Checks and maintains fluid level/refuels; Keeps appropriate records of tasks performed; Occasionally fills in for Crew Leader when needed and assists in training other employees; Employee will be assigned to a specific after hours on-call schedule depending on assigned field; Performs duties of Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment. Attend training as needed to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, as well as maintain required certifications Assist in emergency operations as needed Mentor new employees Additional duties as assigned Qualifications Demonstrates proficiency in operating designated equipment; Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions for operating related equipment; Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and materials used in various utility (water, wastewater, and stormwater) construction projects; Ability to make independent judgments; Skill in performing manual labor under adverse weather conditions; Skill in reading schematics and diagrams for maintaining related equipment; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other City staff and the public; Ability to understand and use Division's Capacity Management Operations and Management (CMOM) to include Sewer Overflow Response Plan (SORP) program; Knowledge of State Regulations and City Specifications concerning sewer collection and stormwater systems; Knowledge of basic hydraulic principles as they apply to sewer collection and stormwater conveyance systems; Knowledge and understanding in use of computers and databases; Ability to adapt to new and changing technologies used in collection/storm systems maintenance; Knowledge of the materials, equipment, and construction methods concerning storm and sewer line maintenance; Knowledge of equipment used for locating, inspecting, and cleaning sewer and stormwater infrastructure Education and Experience Required: High school graduate or high school equivalent; Experience equivalent to two years of full time work in operating the designated or similar equipment and construction or maintenance activities; Valid State of Tennessee or Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at a level appropriate to the area assigned, including endorsements (must maintain throughout employment); Preferred: Grade II Distribution or Collection Systems, or Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control - Level 1, depending on assigned field Forklift Operator Licensure.
