Apprentice Instrument Electrician

Department: Office of Public Utilities

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (hours may vary subject to overtime)
Starting Rate: $28.0675/hour First Year
Eligibility Requirements: Open to All Applicants
Union: IBEW Local 193

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of industrial control systems and instrumentation
  • Work with boiler processes, turbines, scrubber controls, CEM, and analytical instrumentation
    Support PLCs, DCS, and digital and analog control systems
  • Assist with repair of control boards down to the component level
  • Support maintenance of variable frequency drives (VFDs), SCR drives, and DC drives
  • Assist with conduit installation, wiring, and terminations
  • Learn to interpret schematics, technical manuals, and construction drawings
  • Apply algebraic formulas for equipment calibration
  • Complete material, service, and maintenance requisitions

Required Qualifications:Theideal candidate will be a high school graduate or GEDequivalent, have unrestricted 20/20 eyesight (vision correctable to 20/20accepted) with no color blindness, a valid driver's license at time ofbackground, and demonstratethe self-motivation necessary to independently complete the apprenticeshipprogram, which requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 576hours of coursework while working under the guidance of a designated supervisorand foreman; and successfully complete all CWLP/IBEW JATC on-the-job trainingand coursework. Applicants must provide with application, a passingscore of 6 or greater on the NJATC exam. Next available test date: 8/20/2026 at 8:00 am. Email jobs@cwlp.com to schedule a test. Applicants who can verify (by providing undisputabledocumenting evidence) that they are participating in and in good standing, orhave completed an accredited electrical apprenticeship recognized by theElectrical Training Alliance, and whose program utilized the ETA aptitude testrequiring a score of 6 or better to enter said apprenticeship program, mayqualify for a direct interview as determined by the JATC if apprenticeshipopportunities are available.
Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
To be eligible to apply, current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.
