Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE
Carson is looking for a Petroleum Services Technician to join our Albany branch within Carson Industrial Services. This is a specialized, hands-on, customer-facing field role focused on keeping fuel and fluid systems clean, reliable, and compliant across customer locations.
This position provides operational support, predictive maintenance, repair, and replacement of customer equipment, with a primary focus on fuel polishing and fluid reclamation alongside the full range of petroleum-equipment service: fuel dispensers and cardlocks, storage tanks (UST and AST), pumps, tank-monitoring and leak-detection systems, and lube, oil, and DEF systems. The role supports Carson's mission of delivering advanced service offerings that enhance our customers' operational capability and profitability, and that establish Carson as a highly valued business partner.
This is a senior-level technician role. The Petroleum Services Technician is expected to work independently across the most complex petroleum and fluid-reclamation work, diagnose difficult failures, and represent Carson professionally on every site. The position reports directly to the Director of Carson Industrial Services.
JOB DUTIES
Representative work across the role:
Fuel Polishing & Fluid Reclamation
  • Operate, maintain, and repair Carson fuel polishing and fluid reclamation equipment.
  • Perform on-site fuel polishing and conditioning: filtration, water and sediment removal, and microbial contamination remediation for stored fuel and reservoirs.
  • Obtain fluid samples from tanks, reservoirs, and equipment; verify fuel quality and document results.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace customer reliability and fluid dispensing equipment.
  • Install reliability and fluid dispensing equipment.
  • Fabricate parts and accessories as needed to complete service and installation work.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with customers' maintenance personnel on reliability and fluid-handling needs.
  • Perform Internal UST Tank Cleanings

Fuel Dispensing Equipment
  • Routine dispenser preventive maintenance: replace hoses, nozzles, swivels, breakaways, and filters; lubricate; clean sumps and containment; inspect enclosures, gaskets, and vapor-recovery hardware.
  • Diagnose and repair dispenser mechanical and hydraulic flow problems (low, no, or erratic flow); replace meters, pulsers, and flow-control valves and correct meter calibration errors.
  • Replace and repair circuit boards, electronics, display panels, keypads, and receipt printers as licenses allow; diagnose and repair card reader hardware and software (coordinating with the manufacturer for software).
  • Troubleshoot vapor-recovery failures (Stage I and II) and dispenser communication errors (POS and ATG).
  • Install and set new dispensers (outside electrical scope), connect hanging hardware, and perform QC and acceptance testing; program cardlock configurations and coordinate vendor, POS, and ATG startup and commissioning.

Storage Tanks (UST / AST)
  • Inspect and maintain tank areas: manholes, risers, fill caps, spill buckets, gauge covers and fittings; pump water from sumps and spill buckets.
  • Inspect interstitial spaces, overfill prevention, and emergency and PV vents; monitor for leakage and verify level versus ATG; inspect ASTs for corrosion, leaks, and structural integrity, and maintain secondary containment.
  • Install and anchor ASTs and reconfigure AST piping; coordinate licensed contractors on UST and containment installation and removal, and assist with decommissioning.

Submersible & Suction Pumps
  • Service and repair submersible and suction pumps: motors, heads, columns, turbines, impellers, check and foot valves, control boxes, and relay panels; diagnose low-pressure and no-flow issues.
  • Install new pump systems including plumbing; coordinate startup, testing, product-line and flex-connector replacement, and air purge; test pump line leak detectors and confirm calibration.

Tank Monitoring & Leak Detection
  • Coordinate ATG vendor on install, configuration, programming, network connectivity, reporting, and software updates and backups, including smart tank monitors.
  • Replace and calibrate ATG probes, floats, consoles, and peripherals; perform calibration and accuracy verification; troubleshoot communication failures and respond to alarms.
  • Service and test leak detection: sensor probes and floats, sensor wells, turbine sump sensors, and vapor monitoring; coordinate periodic third-party leak-detection testing and document per regulations.

Lube, Oil & DEF Dispensing
  • Routine lube and oil service: fill, top-off, and verify bulk oil inventory; change filters, breathers, and strainers; collect oil and fuel samples.
  • Install and service bulk oil systems, tanks, reels, hoses, nozzles, and grease pumps; inspect and test pump motors, regulators, and pneumatic systems; calibrate meters.
  • Install and service DEF dispensing systems and tanks; maintain DEF hoses, nozzles, and fittings; inspect heating and verify DEF quality.

Safety, Compliance & Administration
  • Work in full OSHA and company compliance: PPE, confined-space and gas-detection requirements, ladder and heights safety, and live-traffic and retail-fueling safety.
  • Handle hazardous materials (HAZCOM and GHS); respond to and contain fuel spills per procedures; maintain regulatory compliance (EPA, state, fire marshal) and required certifications.
  • Manage work orders end to end: open, complete, and close in a timely manner, write clear repair narratives, complete warranty and commissioning forms, and update dispatch with site conditions and photos.
  • Maintain service records, test results, and compliance inspection logs; submit timecards and expense reports per policy; track parts used and complete field purchase orders.
  • Maintain the service vehicle, tools, and test equipment; manage vehicle parts inventory and coordinate calibration of meters, gauges, and instruments.
  • Respond to after-hours and emergency service calls professionally, escalating complex concerns as needed.
  • Prepare reports and monthly inventories, and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Other general tasks and duties as needed to support the branch and the division.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial and fluid-handling equipment, with the ability to troubleshoot and solve complex mechanical and hydraulic problems.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining fluid handling equipment (fuel or lubricants preferred) and providing commercial and industrial reliability services.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and put them into practice; able to act as an all-around troubleshooter across fuel and fluid systems.
  • High-quality written and verbal communication skills; able to interact professionally with customers in person, over the phone, and via other devices.
  • Strong attention to detail; able to work effectively both independently and on a team, and comfortable with basic computer work (email, work-order entry, and reporting).
  • High degree of work flexibility; customer needs come first and may require a quick response at any hour or day, and the ability to manage multiple tasks within compressed time frames.
  • Willing and able to travel; the job requires regular and sometimes extensive travel, mostly within Oregon.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; Class A or B CDL is a plus but not required.
  • required certifications (for example, UST Operator, Confined Space, HAZWOPER, or EPA and manufacturer certifications) are supported and obtained on the job as appropriate to the work performed.

Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in petroleum-equipment service, fluid handling and reclamation, facilities, or a mechanical trade is preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Conditions
  • Ability to work outside and in fluctuating temperatures.
  • Frequently operate a computer and move about the facility to access documents, machinery, and other equipment.
  • Physical demands include twisting, pulling, kneeling, and squatting in and around small spaces.
  • Occasional bending, twisting, and turning while lifting weights of less than seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Maintaining balance at heights of up to twenty (20) feet.
  • Withstanding road shocks and vibrations while driving a commercial vehicle.
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus.
