ANNOUNCEMENT & PURPOSE OF POSITION **INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY** Pottawattamie County Secondary Roads is announcing the hiring of a Tractor/Trailer Operator. The Tractor/Trailer Operator is a full-time position. The purpose of this position is to operate tractor/trailer combinations, as well as other equipment for maintenance and construction of Secondary Road Projects.
This individual is further responsible for maintaining the equipment assigned to them. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Operates construction and maintenance equipment (e.g. single axle dump trucks, tandem axle dump trucks, tractor/trailer combinations, tractors, mowers, belly dumps, low-boys, rollers, wheel loaders and skid steers)
Loads and unloads equipment (e.g. backhoes, bulldozers, rollers, motor graders, excavators, scrapers and wheel loaders). Hauls materials, supplies, and equipment to and from work sites
Performs manual labor including, but not limited to traffic control, brush cutting, installing/maintaining/removing tire chains, snowplow blades and sanders on trucks, patching potholes, tamping backfill, changing ties, installing/maintaining roadway/driveway culverts, repairing handrails on bridges, repairing planks on bridges, pouring and working concrete, and subsidizing the construction crew. Performs snow removal operations. Performs routine scheduled maintenance on assigned vehicle including, but not limited to, changing the oil, filters and other engine fluids, greasing the vehicle, checking tires, lug nuts and washing the interior and exterior surfaces.
Completes a written record of the maintenance services performed on each piece of equipment and visually inspects the condition of equipment before and after operation to determine if repair or maintenance is needed. Completes written work records including, but not limited to, time sheets, monthly cost sheets, rock haul records and equipment maintenance forms. Operates power and hand tools in the performance of duties.
Performs maintenance and housekeeping activities of County buildings and grounds when necessary. Regular and punctual attendance at the assigned work location is an essential function. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities.
The individual must also possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the essential functions of the job. Knowledge and ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner according to traffic laws and regulations. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the proper operation and use of assigned vehicles, equipment, tools and materials.
Experienced in dump truck operations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the general public. ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES Must have a valid Class A Iowa Commercial Driver's License and maintain it during employment. Equipment certifications and Iowa DOT certifications are preferred.
