Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Materials Management, the Courier / Driver / Patient Transporter provides safe, timely, courteous, and confidential transportation of patients, specimens, medications, supplies, records, equipment, and other authorized materials within the hospital campus and approved off-site locations. Additionally, provides support to Material Management Department when needed. The associate follows patient-identification, infection-prevention, traffic-safety, chain-of-custody, privacy, and emergency procedures while supporting efficient patient care and hospital operations.

What You'll Do (not all inclusive)

• Transports laboratory specimens, blood products, medications, medical records, equipment, supplies, mail, and other authorized items using required labeling, temperature control, security, chain-of-custody, and delivery-verification procedures.
• Operates employer-owned vehicles safely and complies with traffic laws, defensive-driving practices, parking rules, route instructions, passenger securement requirements, and hospital vehicle policies.
• Safely transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed, or approved hospital vehicle between departments, diagnostic and treatment areas, discharge locations, and authorized facilities.
• Confirms transport orders and uses required patient identifiers before movement; communicates with nursing or clinical staff regarding precautions, mobility needs, oxygen, lines, drains, isolation status, and destination readiness.
• Observes patients during transport and promptly reports changes in condition, distress, falls, equipment problems, delays, or safety concerns to licensed clinical staff; activates emergency procedures when indicated.
• Provides courteous assistance while protecting dignity, modesty, privacy, and confidentiality; limits discussion and access to protected health information to authorized job purposes.
• Performs documented pre-trip and post-trip inspections; reports collisions, citations, damage, defects, fuel needs, maintenance concerns, and unsafe conditions immediately.
• Cleans and disinfects wheelchairs, stretchers, vehicles, and transport equipment using approved products and procedures; follows standard precautions, exposure-control requirements, and waste-handling rules.
• Uses dispatch, radio, telephone, or electronic systems to accept assignments, prioritize urgent requests, document pickups and deliveries, and communicate delays or completion status.
• Maintains clear transport, mileage, inspection, incident, delivery, and chain-of-custody records in accordance with hospital policy and applicable law.
• Provides assistance in Materials Management Department when needed such as shipping, receiving, stocking, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Must meet the minimum age and licensing requirements applicable to the vehicle and assignment.
• Valid driver’s license of the class required for assigned vehicles. Driving is an essential function because the role regularly transports patients and hospital materials between locations and an alternative means of transportation would not be comparable in time, reliability, safety, or operational effectiveness. Must provide proof of current vehicle insurance.
• Driving record acceptable under hospital policy and insurer requirements; continued eligibility to operate hospital vehicles is required.
• Current Basic Life Support or CPR certification from an employer-approved provider at the time of hire and maintained thereafter.
• Ability to complete required orientation and annual education, including patient transport, safe lifting, wheelchair and stretcher operation, passenger securement, infection prevention, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous-material awareness as applicable, emergency response, privacy, and defensive driving.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to follow safety instructions, receive assignments, complete records, and communicate during routine and emergency operations. Additional language skills are welcomed.
