What is user research?

User research is the process of understanding user behaviors, needs, and motivations through observation techniques, interviews, and other feedback methodologies. It helps product teams design better products by focusing on real user problems and preferences. User researchers gather and analyze data to inform the design and development process, ensuring that products are useful, usable, and valuable to the intended audience.

What is user research?

User research, sometimes referred to as user experience or UX research, aims to understand human needs, motivations, and behavior. In this field, you use a variety of task analysis, observation techniques, and other feedback methodologies to perform your research. You typically work on product design and testing of different elements to contribute to the development of products and services. You may use a variety of data sources at all levels of product development to help the user experience team ensure that a product is fun, intuitive, and accessible.

How do user researchers typically collaborate with product and design teams during a project?

User researchers work closely with product managers and designers throughout all stages of a project. Early on, they help define research questions and identify user needs, often participating in brainstorming sessions. During the design phase, they conduct usability tests and share findings to inform design decisions. Regular communication, workshops, and presenting actionable insights ensure that research outcomes are directly integrated into product improvements. This collaborative process helps maintain a user-centered approach and fosters strong cross-functional teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, and a background in psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like usability testing platforms, survey software (e.g., Qualtrics), and data analysis tools is typically required. Excellent communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you effectively convey insights and advocate for user needs. These abilities ensure research findings drive informed design decisions and create user-centered products.

What is the difference between User Research vs User Experience Designer?

BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health is our Purpose, and it's no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us-from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year-to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.

Job Description

Purpose

BD UCC is establishing Industrial Designer capability for user-centered product design across its platforms. This role bridges aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, and engineering feasibility to deliver products that are intuitive, differentiated, and manufacturable. This individual will embed industrial design best practices into the product development lifecycle - from early-stage innovation through new product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Industrial Design Leadership: Serve as the industrial design subject matter expert across all four UCC platforms. Establish and spread best practices, design standards, and a cohesive UCC design language.

  • User Research: Plan and conduct generative user research to understand needs, workflows, use environments, and unmet opportunities. Synthesize insights from observation, interviews, and usability feedback to inform design direction and customer requirements.

  • User-Centered Concept Development and Visualization: Lead concept generation from user and market insights. Translate user needs into product form through sketching, rendering, and prototyping.

  • Human Factors Support: Collaborate with Human Factors Engineering (HFE) through generative, formative and summative usability studies.

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Partner with mechanical engineering and manufacturing to ensure design intent translates into producible components.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Industrial Design, Product Design, or closely related engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of professional industrial design experience.

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive design decisions with minimal oversight.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; able to influence without authority across multiple business units.

  • Strong hand-sketching and visual communication skills.

  • Proficiency in 3-D CAD Modeling [ie SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo].

  • Proficiency in visualization/rendering software (ie KeyShot).

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (ie Illustrator, Photoshop).

  • Hands-on prototyping experience (3D printing, foam/clay modeling, soft goods mockups).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer products.

  • Experience integrated sensors, wearables, or smart clothing,

  • Experience with user research methods (contextual inquiry, ethnography, usability testing).

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, over-molding, mechanical assembly.

At BD, we prioritize on-site collaboration because we believe it fosters creativity, innovation, and effective problem-solving, which are essential in the fast-paced healthcare industry. For most roles, we require a minimum of 4 days of in-office presence per week to maintain our culture of excellence and ensure smooth operations, while also recognizing the importance of flexibility and work-life balance.

For certain roles at BD, employment is contingent upon the Company's receipt of sufficient proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
