User Experience Internship information

What is a user experience internship?

A User Experience (UX) Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience in designing and improving the usability, accessibility, and overall satisfaction of digital products like websites, apps, or software. Interns typically work under the guidance of experienced UX professionals and may assist with tasks such as user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing. The goal of the internship is to provide hands-on learning and exposure to the UX design process in a real-world setting.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a user experience internship?

As a User Experience Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects such as conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and participating in usability testing. You may also collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and developers to help improve the overall user journey. Interns often gain experience analyzing user data, preparing presentations, and contributing ideas during team brainstorming sessions. This hands-on involvement offers valuable insight into the UX design process and helps you build a strong foundation for a future career in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user experience intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience Intern, you typically need a basic understanding of UX principles, user research, and wireframing, supported by coursework or a portfolio of related projects. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD and usability testing platforms is commonly expected. Strong communication, collaboration, curiosity, and willingness to accept feedback are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities enable interns to contribute effectively to design teams, learn quickly, and help create user-centered products.

Join us as a product design leader and be at the forefront of Ancestry's global growth. We are looking for a visionary designer to partner directly with the International Product team and spearhead the user experience for our priority growth markets. In this fast-paced, high-impact role, you will analyze customer insights and market data to run product experiments, tailoring our core experience to meet distinct local needs and cultural nuances.

You will...

  • Create wireframes, rapid prototypes, and high-fidelity designs for A/B tests, localized MVPs, and market-specific feature rollouts.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, UX Research, and Marketing to align on priorities and ensure seamless, high-quality execution of each pilot and release.

  • Design flexible UI frameworks that scale gracefully across different markets and languages, accounting for text expansion, right-to-left (RTL) formatting, and varied local content requirements.

  • Leverage qualitative user research and quantitative metrics from the experiments to validate design decisions and continuously evolve the international user experience.

Who you are…

  • Currently pursuing a Master of Design (MDes), MFA, or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design (IxD), Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Fine Arts, or a related field. (Candidates from Business or Economics programs who possess relevant UX/product design industry experience are also strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Prior internship, industry experience, or academic research demonstrating focus on UX/UI design and/or interactive product experimentation is highly preferred.

  • A subject matter expert in designing for international audiences, with an understanding of how cultural nuances, localized behaviors, and language translation impact user interfaces.

  • A strategic, empathetic thinker who loves diving into market data and user research to uncover exactly what makes an experience compelling and trustworthy in a specific country.

  • Hands-on experience designing for rapid, iterative product experiments, A/B testing, and growth optimization.

  • Highly proficient in industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma) with a solid understanding of how designs translate into responsive code.

  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design rationale, influence roadmap decisions, and align cross-functional teams.

  • A strong collaborator who thrives in a fast-paced environment and excels at partnering with technical and business stakeholders.

  • A passionate advocate for customers everywhere, with a history of delivering delightful, emotionally resonant product experiences across diverse geographies.
