What is a user experience engineer?

User Experience Engineers are professionals who blend expertise in design and front-end development to create seamless, user-friendly digital products. They focus on optimizing how users interact with websites, applications, or software by improving usability, accessibility, and overall satisfaction. These engineers often collaborate with designers, developers, and product managers to translate user needs into functional and visually appealing interfaces. Their work involves tasks like prototyping, user testing, and coding interfaces using technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

How does a user experience engineer typically collaborate with designers and developers during a project?

User Experience Engineers play a key role in bridging the gap between design and development teams. They work closely with designers to translate wireframes and prototypes into interactive, user-friendly interfaces, ensuring that design intent is preserved throughout the development process. Simultaneously, they collaborate with developers to implement and refine front-end code, troubleshoot technical challenges, and advocate for best practices in accessibility and usability. This collaborative approach helps deliver seamless digital experiences that align with both user needs and technical constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user experience engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience Engineer, you need expertise in UX/UI design principles, user research, prototyping, and front-end development, typically supported by a degree in design, HCI, or computer science. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Sketch, prototyping platforms, and web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills help translate user needs into effective digital experiences. These skills ensure the creation of user-friendly, visually appealing products that meet business and customer needs.

How much do user experience engineers make?

User Experience (UX) engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior UX engineers with specialized skills in design tools and user research can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000 annually.

About the Job

At Google, we focus on the user and all else will follow. Our UX engineers are versatile and passionate about pushing technology forward, comfortable working across discipline lines to develop products used by millions.

You will join a multi‑disciplinary UX team, collaborating with Engineering and Product Management, using user insights to create industry‑leading products. Working on the front end in a challenging, fast‑paced environment, you will bridge UX best practices and production execution. You’ll use your creativity, analytical skills, and knowledge of user‑facing technologies to enable efficient, high‑quality execution and launch innovative features to a global audience.

The web is what you make of it and our team is helping the world make more of the web. From open‑source pros to user‑experience extraordinaires, we develop products that help users connect, communicate and collaborate with others. Our consumer products and cloud platforms give millions of users at homes, businesses, universities and nonprofits around the world the tools that shape their web experience and change the way they think about computing.

In this role, you will design and build innovative user experiences that showcase Jigsaw’s use of AI to address societal challenges. The role will focus on advocating Jigsaw’s work with external audiences, collaborating closely with our marketing and engineering teams to create compelling, interactive demos and experiences. You will have the opportunity to design and build new experiences, rapidly prototype using the latest AI tools, and work cross‑functionally.

Jigsaw is an incubator that builds on Google’s latest technologies to solve societal challenges together. Across the globe, we’re more connected than ever before, to information and to each other, yet many of us feel disconnected from the decisions and systems that affect our lives. We believe that AI can bridge this divide between the desire to shape our world and the ability to do so.

Jigsaw offers mission‑driven work within a nimble interdisciplinary team, connections to academia and civil society, and a quick path to taking technology public. Individual pay is determined by factors including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
