Usability Intern information

What does a Usability Intern do?

A Usability Intern assists in evaluating and improving the user experience of products, websites, or applications. They typically conduct usability tests, collect and analyze user feedback, and help identify areas for design improvement. Their work supports the design team by providing insights into how real users interact with products, making them more intuitive and user-friendly. Usability Interns often work closely with UX designers, researchers, and developers to ensure design solutions effectively meet user needs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Usability Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Usability Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects that typically include assisting with user research, conducting usability testing sessions, analyzing user feedback, and helping create reports on usability findings. You may also collaborate closely with UX designers, product managers, and developers to suggest improvements based on user insights. This role often involves preparing test materials, observing user interactions, and contributing ideas to enhance product usability. Working in this position provides valuable exposure to different stages of the user-centered design process and offers opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in a collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Usability Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Usability Intern, you need a foundational understanding of user experience (UX) principles, basic research methods, and relevant coursework or a degree in human-computer interaction, design, or a related field. Familiarity with usability testing tools, wireframing software (like Figma or Sketch), and data analysis platforms is often expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset help you effectively gather feedback and work with cross-functional teams. These skills are essential for identifying user pain points and contributing to the creation of user-friendly digital products.

Job description

Our Product Management team at Appian is passionate about technology - we love making it, and we love using it. We operate at the intersection of engineering precision, user-centric design, and business strategy within an Agile-led environment that values collaboration and personal growth. By joining our structured university cohort, you will work within a small team of engineers to build simple, powerful features that expand our AI-Powered Process Automation platform.

As a Product Manager Intern, you will transition your technical background into real-world software delivery. Moving beyond purely theoretical coursework, you will step in as an embedded product manager, collaborating with key stakeholders, defining acceptance criteria, and ensuring absolute Enterprise-Grade Orchestration with every iteration.

This internship is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Interns in this program are expected to be in the office 5 days a week to fully experience our culture, learn directly from peers and mentors, and contribute to projects in a collaborative environment. Being in the office provides more opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate with the exceptional people across Appian.

Applicants considered for Summer 2027 - Students Only

What You'll Do

  • Own the Agile Backlog: Act as the embedded product owner for a highly skilled engineering squad, taking charge of backlog prioritization, feature sizing, and iterative sprint planning.

  • Drive Collaborative Discovery: Share innovative ideas, analyze technical specifications, and gather continuous feedback through design sessions, user experience (UX) reviews, and usability mockups.

  • Define Product Roadmaps: Partner with senior product leaders to structure enterprise software roadmaps, balancing long-term strategic investments with rapid feature delivery.

  • Practice Stakeholder Negotiation: Empathize with conflicting stakeholder demands and developer constraints, applying data-driven negotiation skills to make optimal feature compromises.

  • Conduct Impact Analysis: Monitor post-launch usability metrics and track user success parameters to verify that new releases address true customer needs.

  • Participate in Passion Frameworks: Showcase your creative problem-solving skills during our department-led Hackathons and drive unique prototypes using dedicated Engineering Indie Time.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a strong academic record. Must be returning to school following the completion of the Summer 2027 internship to continue degree requirements.
  • Program Availability: Ability to commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) schedule for the duration of the 10-week summer program.
  • Proven fluency in AI and LLMs, encompassing both the strategic development of AI-powered platform capabilities and the hands-on application of AI tools to accelerate daily workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a technical internship or a portfolio of significant personal/academic projects.

At this time, Appian will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.

Thank you for your interest in joining our team! Please note that we will officially begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews starting August 2026. We appreciate your patience and look forward to connecting with you then.
