Job description

JSW Steel is seeking and experienced VTD Helper to join our team!
The selected person will support the operation of the Vacuum Tank Degasser (VTD), a critical process used to refine molten steel and achieve precise metallurgical quality. This role works hands-on with operators to prepare equipment, monitor processes, handle materials, and maintain a safe, clean work environment. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-heat industrial setting.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the VTD Operator with equipment setup, operation, and shutdown of the vacuum degassing system.
  • Prepare ladles, hoses, alloy additions, and sampling tools prior to treatment.
  • Monitor equipment for leaks, pressure fluctuations, temperature issues, and other abnormal conditions.
  • Communicate process conditions and updates clearly to the Operator and Supervisor.
  • Follow all instructions provided by supervision to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Comply with all plant safety rules, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and hot metal protocols.
  • Maintain safe working conditions around molten steel, heavy equipment, and overhead cranes.
  • Immediately report hazards, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe behaviors to supervision.
  • Assist with the delivery, staging, and handling of alloys for the VTD process.
  • Safely manage slag and debris using hand tools such as shovels, bars, and hooks.
  • Support sample collection and ensure timely transfer to Quality Control personnel.
  • Perform routine cleaning of VTD platforms, hoses, hoods, and surrounding work areas.
  • Assist with basic maintenance tasks including gasket replacement, hose connections, and water line checks.
  • Keep tools maintained and workstations organized and free of hazards.
  • Work collaboratively with crane operators, ladlemen, furnace operators, and QC technicians.
  • Accurately follow verbal and written instructions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings, pre-shift briefings, and shift change communications.

Skills, Experience and Education:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work safely in extreme heat, high noise levels, and around molten steel.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding work.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Previous experience in steelmaking or heavy industrial environments.
  • Familiarity with melt shop operations, including ladles, furnaces, or vacuum systems.
  • Overhead crane and/or forklift experience (certification a plus).
