Transportation Maint Tech I

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Maint Tech II

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract inspection and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:Transportation Maint Tech

• Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.

• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

• Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.

• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

• Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
• Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.

• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.

• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

 Transportation Maint Tech II

Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Maint Tech I as well as:

• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.

• Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Education:

• No education required.

 Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

• No experience required

Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver

Transportation Main Tech I

Education:

• No education required.

 Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):

• 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.  (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).  Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

 Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II

Includes all competencies listed for Transportation Maint Tech I as well as:

• Considerable knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

• Proficient skill in:

  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

 Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transportation Maint Tech I and II

• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

• Subject to noise

• Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices

• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lb.

• Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)

• This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

  • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

• Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

• Must be available to work hours other than 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

• Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
• Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
