Job description

Position Summary
"Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) Nursing Assistant"
Jewett Orthopedics Institute (JOI)
Department: OHJOI Orthopedic Nursing 6 FL
3 x 12-hour shifts
(Day-Shift & Night-Shift)
(Variable Full-Time, Part-Time and Per Diem Available)
Position Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) provides direct patient care and supports the interdisciplinary team in caring for patients undergoing continuous video EEG monitoring. The NA plays a vital role in maintaining patient safety, observing for changes in patient condition, supporting seizure precautions, and assisting with activities of daily living while promoting a safe, compassionate, and patient-centered environment.
Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current Nursing Assistant certification, Patient Care Technician certification, or equivalent role-specific qualification as required by organizational standards.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Previous experience in acute care, neuroscience, telemetry, progressive care, or patient care settings preferred.
  • Strong observation, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to the nursing team.
  • Ability to safely assist with patient mobility, transfers, and activities of daily living.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience caring for neurologic, seizure, telemetry, or progressive care patients.
  • Knowledge of seizure precautions and fall prevention strategies.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, ambulation, and other activities of daily living.
  • Maintain continuous awareness of patients at risk for seizure activity and promptly notify the RN of any changes in condition or observed seizure-like activity.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining seizure precautions, fall prevention measures, and patient safety protocols.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, heights, weights, intake and output, and other delegated patient care activities.
  • Support patient mobility and safe transfers while adhering to safe patient handling guidelines.
  • Assist nurses during seizure events by ensuring patient safety, obtaining necessary equipment, and supporting emergency response efforts as directed.
  • Monitor patients for changes in neurological status, behavior, or responsiveness and immediately report concerns to the RN.
  • Maintain a safe and organized patient environment, ensuring emergency and seizure precaution equipment is readily available.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and room preparation.
  • Collaborate with Registered Nurses, Neurologists, EEG Technologists, and other members of the healthcare team to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Provide compassionate support to patients and families while reinforcing safety measures and unit expectations.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation according to organizational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection prevention practices, patient privacy regulations, and quality initiatives.
