Job description

Position Overview

The Transportation Infrastructure Precast Innovation Center (TRANS-IPIC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of digital infrastructure, digital twins, and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on monitoring, management, resilience, and intelligent operation of transportation infrastructure systems. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation digital approaches for civil infrastructure, integrating AI, sensing, data analytics, physics-based modeling, and digital twin technologies to better understand, predict, and manage infrastructure performance throughout its lifecycle. The research will address challenges associated with transportation infrastructure, with opportunities to work with real-world infrastructure data and field-deployed sensing systems.


Research Focus

Potential research topics include:

  • Digital twins for civil infrastructure – development and deployment of dynamic digital representations of infrastructure assets and systems.
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning – application of AI for infrastructure condition assessment, prediction, anomaly detection, and decision support.
  • Infrastructure sensing and monitoring – integration of IoT, structural health monitoring, remote sensing, computer vision, and other emerging sensing technologies.
  • AI-enhanced infrastructure management – intelligent approaches for inspection, maintenance, asset management, and lifecycle decision-making.
  • Physics-informed and data-driven modeling – integration of engineering knowledge, numerical models, and AI for reliable infrastructure predictions.
  • Multimodal infrastructure data – fusion of sensor, imagery, geospatial, InSAR, inspection, simulation, and operational data.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field by the start date.
  • Strong research experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Artificial intelligence/machine learning
  • Digital twins
  • Data-driven modeling
  • Remote sensing
  • Computer vision
  • IoT and sensing
  • Infrastructure asset management
  • Computational civil engineering
  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C++, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish scholarly work.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
