Job description

UPS Field Technician

JOB SUMMARY:
The UPS Battery Technician plays a key role in supporting sales, engineering, project estimation, and the installation of critical power systems, including UPS systems, switchgear, and telecommunications equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget while adhering to IEEE standards and manufacturer specifications. The technician conducts Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), leads on-site safety toolbox meetings, and maintains a strong commitment to workplace safety. Success in this role requires professionalism, a positive attitude, effective communication skills, technical expertise, and a dedication to delivering exceptional customer service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Communicate with suppliers about warranty, sizing, safety, and maintenance issues.
  • Be able to physically remove and replace batteries, spill containment, racks and prepare spent batteries for shipment to smelter in accordance with DOT/EPA requirements.
  • Able to correctly size UPS Systems while considering; space, temperature, maintenance, and performance.
  • Able to evaluate and recommend EHS equipment necessary to comply with EPA, DOT & OSHA in battery rooms.
  • Able to install, maintain, and evaluate UPS Modules.
  • Able to run Alber Cell order and Alber BCT capacity tester on batteries for evaluation.
  • Achieve FPY (First Pass Yield) by properly evaluation of projects and having all necessary tools, material, and equipment necessary to complete job on first visit.
  • Keep inventory of all inventories for a project.
  • Be able to do all charger repairs and P.M. (preventative maintenance) to chargers and battery systems.
  • Clean and neutralize batteries, as necessary.
  • Proper watering of batteries.
  • Periodic maintenance and repairs.
  • Notify supervisor of equipment not working properly.
  • Package and dispose of used acids and batteries in accordance with DOT/EPA and OSHA regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years experience working on UPS systems
  • Proven safety record, experience in LOTO procedure and JHA's
  • Excellent written communication and people skills
  • Experience with Microsoft office, excel, word, and adobe acrobat
  • Clean driving record
  • Must have working knowledge of electrical circuits and electronics
  • Must be able to decipher blueprints and build out according to plans or redline as needed
  • Must be able to preform JHA's at customer sites

The physical demands and working conditions requirement indicated below are examples of the demands that must be performed in carrying out the essential job functions.
Physical Demands:
Sitting, standing, and walking (up to continuously); frequent use of computer and telephone requiring repetitive finger, hand, and arm movement; occasionally carry office supplies and other miscellaneous items up to 50 pounds. Continuous use of seeing, hearing, verbal communication.
Working Conditions: Work indoors and outdoors; exposure to temperatures commensurate with outdoor seasonal temperatures.
