What is a UPS engineer?

UPS Engineers are professionals who design, install, maintain, and troubleshoot Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems. These systems provide emergency power to critical equipment during power outages or fluctuations, ensuring continuous operation for businesses and organizations. UPS Engineers work with electrical systems, perform regular testing, and may also recommend upgrades or replacements to improve system reliability. Their expertise is crucial in environments where power stability is essential, such as data centers, hospitals, and industrial facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UPS engineer?

To thrive as a UPS Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, experience with power systems, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, electrical schematics, and diagnostic tools, as well as certifications like IEEE or manufacturer-specific training, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure reliable system performance and safe operation. These competencies are vital for maintaining critical power infrastructure and preventing costly downtime in essential facilities.

What are some common challenges faced by a UPS engineer in maintaining uninterrupted power supply systems?

UPS Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex system faults, managing aging equipment, and ensuring minimal downtime during maintenance. They must stay updated with the latest technological advancements and safety standards, as well as coordinate closely with electrical engineers, facility managers, and vendors. Additionally, responding to emergency power failures and performing preventive maintenance under tight deadlines are key aspects of the role that require strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.

What is the difference between Ups Engineer vs Battery Technician?

AspectUps EngineerBattery Technician
CredentialsTypically requires electrical or electronics engineering background, certifications in UPS systemsRequires electrical or battery-specific certifications, often with technical training in batteries
Work EnvironmentDesign, install, maintain UPS systems in data centers, industrial facilitiesTest, repair, replace batteries in various settings including telecom, backup power systems
Industry UsageCommon in data centers, IT infrastructure, industrial facilitiesFound in telecom, power backup, maintenance services

Ups Engineers focus on the design, installation, and maintenance of uninterruptible power supply systems, ensuring continuous power in critical environments. Battery Technicians specialize in testing, repairing, and replacing batteries within these systems. While both roles require electrical knowledge and certifications, Ups Engineers typically handle system-level tasks, whereas Battery Technicians focus on battery components. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right role for their skills and career goals.

Electrical Engineer | Data Centers

Position Summary

CAM is seeking an Electrical Engineer to become an integral member of our Mission Critical Engineering team. This position is responsible for the engineering design and technical execution of hyperscale and AI data center projects from concept through construction.

The Electrical Engineer will work collaboratively with Principal Electrical Engineers, Electrical Designers, clients, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to develop innovative, reliable, and constructible electrical systems. This role is expected to actively contribute to engineering development within a collaborative Revit/BIM environment while ensuring designs meet applicable codes, client requirements, and CAM quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for mission-critical and hyperscale data center facilities.
  • Develop electrical distribution systems including medium-voltage distribution, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, busway, PDUs, RPPs, and grounding systems.
  • Perform engineering calculations including load calculations, equipment sizing, voltage drop, and feeder sizing.
  • Develop electrical one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, panel schedules, and construction documents.
  • Actively contribute to project development within Revit while collaborating with Electrical Designers to produce coordinated BIM models and construction documents.
  • Design electrical systems supporting high-availability data center infrastructure (N, N+1, 2N topologies)
  • Perform short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies using SKM/ETAP
  • Coordinate with utility providers for power delivery and interconnection requirements
  • Develop technical specifications and equipment selection documentation
  • Support value engineering and cost optimization initiatives
  • Assist in commissioning and system turnover activities
  • Design for high-density and AI-driven compute environments
  • Coordinate with mechanical, structural, architectural, civil, controls, and telecommunications disciplines.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Review equipment submittals, respond to RFIs, and support construction administration activities.
  • Perform site visits and assist with field observations during construction.
  • Mentor Electrical Designers and support their technical development.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable codes, standards, and CAM engineering procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, BIM standards, and design workflows.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 4+ years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in Revit is required.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA, and IEEE standards.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution systems.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing mission-critical data center electrical systems strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with electrical engineering experience in industrial, semiconductor, manufacturing, utility power, healthcare, or other complex infrastructure projects are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with standby generators, UPS systems, busway, PDUs, and RPPs.
  • Experience with SKM Power*Tools and/or ETAP.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit of licensure preferred.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Navisworks, and BIM coordination.

Why CAM?
