Upper School Physical Education Intern Teacher (part-time)
2026-27

Position Description

Columbus Academy seeks a part-time Upper School Physical Education Intern Teacher who will also coach middle school and/or upper school sports with responsibilities to begin August 2026.

The individual selected for this internship will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities under the direct guidance of veteran faculty mentors:

  • Teach Upper school students with an awareness of the developmental needs of teenage students

  • Assume a share of supervisory responsibilities expected of all part-time faculty members

  • Create and collaborate with departmental colleagues on curriculum design and development

  • Create recreational/intramural activities for high school students

  • Supervise and instruct students in the weight room for both PE credit and student-athletes seeking time during the day to lift weights

  • Advise and collaborate with Upper School students who are actively involved with physical activities that CA does not offer to help them obtain their US PE credits

  • Collaborate with the physical education department chair, and students to ensure all PE graduation requirements are accurately accounted for.

  • Implement monthly programming with non-traditional PE activities utilizing outside expertise to expose our students to lifelong health and fitness experiences.

  • Offer opportunities to incorporate faculty and staff to utilize our campus facilities for wellness opportunities

  • Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences

  • Hold students accountable for the school’s standards of behavior

  • Work with others in the school community to support each student’s emotional well-being.

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in health, physical education, or a closely related field

  • Passion for teaching and coaching

  • Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in physical education/coaching instruction

  • Leadership qualities to inspire, motivate, and develop students

  • A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning

  • Enthusiasm, a positive sense of humor, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills

Physical Conditions

Candidates must be able to manage the following conditions:

  • Classroom environment

  • Mobility around school buildings and on different floors (handicap accessible)

  • Repetitive motion (use of a keyboard)

  • Periodic need to move light furniture, hang visuals in classroom, carry objects (no more than 40 pounds), etc.

  • A non-smoking campus
