Job description

About HTX Labs
Since 2017, HTX Labs has been on a mission to accelerate the future of learning, employing immersive software training solutions and content development services for the Department of Defense to elevate the level of proficiency and preparedness of today's warfighter.
HTX Labs developed the EMPACT® Immersive Learning Platform to address a growing need to modernize training, improve safety, maximize operational efficiency, and build resilience and readiness across the defense industry.
HTX Labs is dedicated to driving learning innovation, providing the necessary digital infrastructure to empower users to easily create, deploy, measure, and sustain mission-specific, immersive training programs anytime, anywhere, on any device, with anyone, at scale.
We're looking for an Unreal Engineer to join our Product team.
As an Unreal Engineer at HTX Labs, you'll develop core systems and tools for the immersive, interactive experiences within the EMPACT® platform - combining technical engineering with creative problem-solving to bring real-world training scenarios to life. You'll design and implement systems, tools, and interactions that support realistic procedures, AI-assisted workflows, and dynamic multi-platform delivery (VR, desktop, tablet).
This role requires both technical depth and creative collaboration - working closely with Technical Artists, Designers, and Gameplay Engineers to ensure that teams have the tools they need, build a rich SDK that extends our capabilities, and interacts with our backend to submit analytics and performance data for students and instructors.
Who You Are
* You're a technically skilled Unreal developer who thrives in real-time, interactive environments.
* You balance creative innovation with engineering discipline and code clarity.
* You love solving complex problems - especially ones that help people learn or perform better.
* You understand how to collaborate across teams - art, design, engineering, and instructional systems - to deliver cohesive experiences.
* You enjoy building tools and systems that are utilized by others to achieve their goals.
* You take pride in clean, modular, reusable code that makes systems scalable and maintainable.
Responsibilities
* Development & Implementation
* Design, build, and maintain interactive systems, tools, and experiences within Unreal Engine (Blueprints and/or C++).
* Integrate web services and API endpoints to persist data and push analytics of user's performances.
* Implement systems and APIs that work across different platforms and use cases.
* Build flexible, data-driven solutions that enable other teams to build systems off of.
* Work with DevOps to implement pipelines that build and deliver the client reliably.
* Understand existing implementations and guide change to maximize backwards compatibility.
* Collaboration & Documentation
* Work closely with IS, Design, and CX teams to deliver client improvements and capabilities.
* Document systems, features, and workflows clearly for reusability and scalability.
* Participate in peer reviews, system architecture, and daily syncs.
* Communicate progress, blockers, and risks proactively to producers and team members.
* Innovation & R&D
* Explore new Unreal capabilities (e.g., AI integration, procedural systems, etc.).
* Prototype new interactions, SDKs/APIs, and/or AI-assisted training tools.
* Support HTX's AI Enablement and Rapid Prototyping initiatives by contributing technical expertise.
Skills
* Strong proficiency in Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints and C++).
* Understanding of game engine architecture, asset integration, and optimization techniques.
* Familiarity with source control systems (Perforce, Git).
* Strong debugging and performance profiling skills.
* Experience building user interactions, gameplay systems, or simulation logic.
* Excellent problem-solving and collaboration skills.
Preferred Skills
* Experience developing for VR/XR devices (Quest, Vive, etc.).
* Knowledge of AI/ML integrations or LLM-driven systems within Unreal.
* Familiarity with DoD, aerospace, or industrial simulation content.
* Experience with multiplayer systems, replication, or data synchronization.
* Familiarity with cloud integrations, APIs, or data services.
* Understanding of secure software practices under NIST/CMMC standards.
* Basic understanding of Python or scripting for tool automation.
Requirements
* 3-6 years of experience developing in Unreal Engine (Blueprint and C++).
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Game Development, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
* Demonstrated experience delivering real-time, interactive applications.
* Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
* Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance if required.
