Unreal Engine Ai Programmer information

What is an Unreal Engine AI programmer?

An Unreal Engine AI Programmer is a software developer who specializes in creating and implementing artificial intelligence (AI) systems within the Unreal Engine, a popular game development platform. Their responsibilities include designing behaviors for non-player characters (NPCs), developing navigation and decision-making systems, and optimizing AI performance for games or simulations. They work closely with designers and artists to ensure AI behaves realistically and enhances the player's experience. Proficiency in C++ and familiarity with Unreal Engine's Blueprint visual scripting are typically required for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine AI programmer?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine AI Programmer, you need strong programming skills in C++, a solid understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, and experience with Unreal Engine’s Blueprint and AI systems. Familiarity with tools like Unreal Engine’s Behavior Trees, Blackboard, and navigation systems, as well as experience with version control systems, is often required. Problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with designers and other developers. These skills ensure the creation of intelligent, responsive game characters and systems, which are crucial for engaging gameplay and a seamless player experience.

How does an Unreal Engine AI programmer typically collaborate with game designers and artists during development?

As an Unreal Engine AI Programmer, you’ll work closely with game designers to understand gameplay requirements and translate them into technical AI systems, such as enemy behaviors or NPC pathfinding. Collaboration with artists is also common, especially when integrating AI-controlled characters and ensuring their animations and visual feedback align with the game’s vision. Regular meetings and cross-disciplinary communication are essential, allowing you to iterate on features and quickly address changes or challenges. This collaborative environment fosters creative solutions and ensures that AI features enhance the overall player experience.

What is the difference between Unreal Engine Ai Programmer vs Game Developer?

Industry UsageFocus on AI systems within Unreal Engine projectsBroader game development including gameplay, UI, and systems

The Unreal Engine Ai Programmer specializes in developing AI systems within Unreal Engine, focusing on behavior trees, navigation, and AI logic. In contrast, a Game Developer has a broader role, handling various aspects of game creation such as gameplay mechanics, UI, and overall project development. While both roles require knowledge of Unreal Engine and C++, the AI Programmer concentrates on AI-specific features, whereas the Game Developer covers a wider range of development tasks.

What jobs can you get knowing Unreal Engine?

Unreal Engine knowledge can lead to roles such as Unreal Engine AI Programmer, game developer, technical artist, or environment designer. These positions often require skills in programming, 3D modeling, and understanding of game development workflows, and are common in the gaming, simulation, and virtual production industries.

Job description

Astral Insights builds AI-driven solutions to solve the most complex operational challenges in manufacturing and supply chain. We're looking for a motivated Full Stack Software Engineer intern to join our engineering team and contribute to real product work: building out our Artemis AI problem-solving engine and Phoenix data platform.

You'll work alongside senior engineers on Artemis and Phoenix, picking up features, squashing bugs, and learning what it means to build production software in a fast-moving, quality-conscious environment. If you're early in your career and serious about becoming a strong engineer, this is a place where that happens quickly.

What You'll Do Contribute features across the stack

Pick up real product work on the Artemis AI problem-solving engine and the Phoenix data platform. Ship features across the frontend (Next.js) and backend (Python, REST APIs) under the guidance of senior engineers.

Write and run your own tests

Build the habit of testing your own code from day one. Quality is not a separate phase; it is part of how we ship.

Participate in code reviews

Sprint planning, daily standups, and iterative delivery. You will own work end-to-end inside a sprint and be expected to communicate progress and blockers clearly.

Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully

Use Claude Code, Copilot, and similar tools to accelerate your work. Learn when to trust the output, when to verify, and when to throw it out.

Document what you build

Write clearly enough that a teammate can pick up your work without a meeting. Good documentation is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.

What We're Looking For Pursuing or recently completed a CS-adjacent degree

Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. We care about what you can build, not just where you studied.

Working knowledge of a backend language and the web fundamentals Comfortable with Git Hands-on with agentic coding tools Demonstrated exceptional ability

Academically, professionally, or through extracurriculars. You have shipped, won, built, or led something that stands out.

Curious and self-directed

You have a bias toward figuring things out before asking for help. You ask sharp questions when you do.

Clear communicator in a remote-first environment

You can write a clear update, leave a useful PR comment, and run a focused video call. Your team should never have to guess what you're working on.

Bonus Points
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases.
  • Coursework or projects involving data pipelines, machine learning, APIs, or MCPs.
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks in any language.
Why Astral
  • Real product work on the Artemis AI engine and Phoenix data platform, not a rotation program or busywork.
  • Direct mentorship from senior engineers and exposure to the founding team.
  • Technically interesting problems: AI agents, supply chain signal processing, and regulated data pipelines.
  • A small, high-output team where your contributions are visible and your growth is fast.
  • Heavy investment in AI tooling. If a tool makes you faster, we buy it.

Must be authorized to work in the US. Hybrid arrangements and remote programs are open for consideration.
