How much do unlicensed nursing jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for unlicensed nursing in Iowa is $30.03, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.97 and $39.37 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is unlicensed nursing?

Most nursing jobs require that you have passed the NCLEX nursing exam, but for those that have yet to do so, or for those whose licensure may have expired, unlicensed nursing jobs are administrative or support positions in which you provide assistance to licensed nurse practitioners or registered nurses. Administrative jobs include medical coding or insurance billing positions. In these positions, your duties include reviewing patient medical histories and electronic health records, querying insurance companies, and double-checking information against other patient records. More hands-on positions, such as being a nurse's assistant, include patient care and advocacy duties. You can get unlicensed nursing jobs in a specialization, such as assisting a cardiovascular or emergency nurse, and such positions are useful for skills training if you are considering a further career as an RN.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an unlicensed nursing assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unlicensed Nursing Assistant, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, infection control, and strong observational skills, typically supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training. Familiarity with patient charting systems, vital sign monitoring devices, and standard healthcare protocols is often required. Compassion, patience, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for supporting patients and collaborating with licensed healthcare staff. These abilities are vital to ensure patient comfort, maintain safety standards, and provide essential support in healthcare environments.

What are some common challenges faced by unlicensed nursing staff in healthcare settings?

Unlicensed nursing staff, such as nursing assistants or aides, often encounter challenges related to balancing a fast-paced workload while maintaining high-quality patient care. They may need to juggle multiple patient needs, respond quickly to changes in patient conditions, and communicate effectively with licensed nurses and other healthcare professionals. Additionally, they are sometimes faced with emotionally demanding situations and must adhere to strict protocols and regulations. Strong teamwork and adaptability are key to thriving in these environments.

What is the difference between Unlicensed Nursing vs Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)?

AspectUnlicensed NursingCertified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
CredentialsNo formal license required, may have training or certificationMust complete state-approved CNA training and pass certification exam
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, home healthLong-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with basic patient care, supporting licensed nurses, documentationProviding basic patient care, bathing, feeding, mobility assistance

Unlicensed Nursing roles typically involve assisting licensed nurses without requiring a formal license, while CNAs must complete specific training and certification. Both work in similar healthcare settings and support patient care, but CNAs have standardized credentials that validate their skills.

What can an unlicensed nursing do?

Unlicensed nursing typically refers to roles such as nursing assistants or aides who provide basic patient care under the supervision of licensed nurses. They can assist with activities like bathing, feeding, and taking vital signs but cannot perform tasks that require a nursing license, such as administering medication or developing care plans.
