Job description

The Systems Administration team designs, installs, configures, and maintains all UNIX and Windows server systems. All systems are configured and maintained to handle the capacity requirements as well as future growth. High availability and disaster recovery solutions are implemented to provide a system back-up to prevent issues in the event of any level of system failure.

The Unix Systems Administrator Level 3 collaborates with various B&H departments and external resources to actively develop both short and long term projects pertaining to the overall architecture, design, and planning of server systems. Additionally, the Level 3 assists in the installation, configuration, and overall maintenance of each system. S/he ensures that all server systems are constructed according to current capacity requirements, set up with high availability, backed-up for disaster recovery, and equipped to handle additional future server loads.

The admin accurately documents server system statuses and records and corrects major issues as they arise. To prevent many issues, routine diagnostic checks are performed as well as the configuration and installation of system patches, updates, and upgrades according to PCI compliance standards.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to design, build, maintain and administer all aspects of backups, restores, and Disaster recovery.
  • Design, plan, and create architecture for large scale server implementations for strategic business purposes
  • Research all viable solutions and collaborate with IS Facilities team, consultants, and external vendors for cost effective options on integration of additional server systems as well as upgrades to current systems 
  • Monitor server capacity requirements and preemptively implement solutions to curtail system issues or crashes  
  • Configure, install, and accurately document hardware within a single/cluster, disaster recovery, and high availability server environments
  • Perform an RCA and appropriately document all server system issues 
  • Diagnose and repair software failures, stemming from server issues
  • Maintain and monitor server environments and infrastructure for high availability and disaster recovery requirements
  • Collaborate with Networking/Security teams to ensure proper server configuration
  • Implement all system server upgrades, updates, and patches according to vendor and PCI requirements
  • Establish schedules for system maintenance and diagnostic checks
  • Maintain system security level including appropriate accesses, user accounts, and system permissions
  • Utilizes project management software and time tracking systems in conjunction with project status feedback reports
  • Provide support to lower level administrators for training or support purposes
  • Participates in on-call rotation and available 24hr (7d/wk, 365d/yr) for any emergency and support based issues
  • Create and maintain dashboards

Additional Responsibilities:

  • As assigned by Manager
  • Travel to IT expos to research new technologies
  • Attend off-site training courses

Preferred Education, Experience and Licenses:

  • 6+ years experience in a large scale server production grade environment
  • Troubleshooting Linux / Windows O/S front-end and back-end server configurations
  • Proficient with third party software integration
  • Experience with different server capabilities, compatibilities, and characteristics of complex server hardware
  • Working knowledge of UNIX and Linux operating systems

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge and hands on experience in administration and configuration on veritas net backup and Veritas Cluster.
  • Hands on experience in administration of other tools and products such as LDAP, Active Directory, Groupware, VM Ware, cloud computing, virtualization such as Solaris Zones, and Office 365.
  • Expert knowledge and use of computer systems such as, hardware, software, etc
  • Proficient with complete integration of server systems within an enterprise network
  • Familiar with Databases and related concepts (Oracle, Informix, MySQL)
  • Understanding of UNIX and Perl Shell scripting
  • Knowledge of efficient IT cost solutions for server hardware
  • Great team-work skills, strong communicator, articulate, excellent grammar and writing skills, and professional phone demeanor
  • Detail-oriented, quick and analytical thinker, resourceful and efficient research skills
  • Knowledge of B&H policies and procedures
