This role oversees a team of multi-disciplinary engineers supporting mission-critical infrastructure, ensuring compliance with federal security standards, continuity of operations, and high availability across hybrid platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Operational Management
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a technical team of server, cloud, storage, and networking engineers.
  • Oversee daily operations ensuring 24/7/365 system availability, SLA adherence, and infrastructure stability.
  • Manage engineering workload and resource allocation for migration, modernization, and operational priorities.
  • Drive root-cause analysis (RCA), incident response, and major incident management and on-call rotations.

Data Center Closure & Azure Government Migration
  • Serve as the technical lead for Data Center Closure Program, including assessment, planning, and execution of server, storage, networking, and application migrations to Azure.
  • Develop target-state architectures for Azure IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS replacements based on modernization goals.
  • Coordinate across workstreams (Applications, Databases, Storage, Networking, Security, DR/COOP) to ensure end-to-end migration readiness.
  • Lead migration activities using Azure Migrate, Data Box, replication tools, and database modernization techniques.
  • Ensure alignment with Azure capabilities, constraints, and roadmap dependencies.

On-Premises Infrastructure & Platform Support
  • Oversee Windows Server, Linux (RHEL), and Unix server platforms during migration and decommissioning phases.
  • Maintain and operate enterprise storage systems (Hitachi SAN/NAS) until retirement.
  • Manage enterprise backup systems (Veritas NetBackup, Cohesity) including Azure-integrated backup and long-term retention strategies.
  • Conduct patch management, tuning, capacity planning, firmware upgrades, and lifecycle management for legacy infrastructure.

Azure Cloud Operations & Governance
  • Manage and operate Azure resources including VNets, ExpressRoute, storage, compute, identity, and security controls.
  • Implement and maintain Azure governance including RBAC, Entra ID, conditional access, resource policies, cost management, tagging, and FinOps.
  • Architect secure landing zones, DMZ environments, firewall policies, and segmentation for workloads.
  • Oversee integration of on-prem and cloud network infrastructure, including redesign of network topology during data center shutdown.

Monitoring, Logging & Incident Response
  • Implement Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Sentinel, dashboards, and automated alerting for complete infrastructure visibility.
  • Lead post-incident RCA, develop corrective actions, and enforce operational improvements for reliability and rapid recovery.
  • Maintain configuration baselines, performance metrics, and operational health reporting for leadership and compliance teams.

Process Modernization, Automation & Documentation
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, cloud adoption, performance tuning, and service optimization.
  • Maintain migration runbooks, SOPs, architectural diagrams, DR plans, and datacenter shutdown documentation.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, cloud adoption, performance tuning, and service optimization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or equivalent experience (4 years experience in lieu of degree).
  • 8+ years of experience in enterprise infrastructure (servers, storage, backup, networking).
  • 5+ years of experience managing and leading technical engineering teams.
  • 5+ years of hands-on Azure (preferably Azure Government) architecture and operations experience.
  • Proven success leading cloud migrations or data center shutdowns in a regulated environment.
  • Strategic leadership of large-scale cloud migrations and data center transformations.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration and executive reporting.
  • Proactive problem-solving, crisis management, and operational decision-making.
  • Ability to lead technical teams through modernization while maintaining daily operational stability.

Desired:
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure Administrator Associate.
  • ITIL v4 Foundation (or practical knowledge of IT Service Management principles).
  • Storage or Linux Certifications (e.g., Red Hat RHCSA/RHCE, Hitachi VSP).
